Power Augers
« on: Jan 23, 2011, 12:04 PM »
I'm looking to purchase a power auger, and I was just wondering if you guys could help me with a few questions.

1. I got a small car and  fully assembled I don't think it would fit in my car. So I was wondering if the motor is detachable bc 2 people have told me 2 different things.

2. How much gas to they typically go through?

3. What type of maintence is involved?

4. Has anyone ever heard of someone converting a hand auger into a power auger by attaching a drill to it? The guy at my bait shop told me about this. If so does anyone know how to do it?

Thanks
Jason

you would probally be best off using a 24 volt drill, and have a few spare batteries.

for the cost of a 24 volt cordless drill and batteries you mind a well just buy a gas powered. I got my eskimo z71 from glens for $380

cost, but you dont have to maintain it as much and it takes up much less space which is what he wants

The cordless drill set up works well just make sure you have it set up with the adapter that keeps it from falling down the hole, seen it once already.

How many holes can you drill with a cordless drill?? It seems to me that it would take forever and battersies woulo die very fast

There are youtube vids and it's actually pretty quick. If I get one of these I'd def keep a few extra batteries on hand.. Granted the drill and batteries may cost as much as a power auger but no need to buy gas and no maintence on it either plus it will fit easily in my mustang.

With a gas powered auger the powerhead is disconnected from the blade in less than 1 minute with an allen wrench. Much better way to go then the cordless imo. Icegator seems pretty too though

Is that drill for real!?  I already have a 24volt drill so this would be sweet.  Anyone on here actually have one?

My Jiffy just has one pin that keeps the powerhead on the auger. Real easy to get on and off.

I had a Clarke 24 volt drill that would cut really fast and drill alot of holes with a 6 inch Strikemaster Lazer auger, until I broke the clutch on the drill and didn't know how to fix it. Then I bought a Black and Decker 24 volt and it would bog down in the first hole and then the battery would die. I would rate it a zero holes per charge. This year I bought a Strikemaster Electric  6 inch auger and last weekend drilled about 20 holes with plenty of power left over. Only took about 1 hour to Recharge with a 0.75 Ah charger that everybody here on Is seems to recommend. I found that recharge time to be hard to beleive.

Just my 2 cents.

making frappes and fruit puree's were never so easy. my jiffy does everything around the house from making dinner to doing the gardening and put a towel on the bottom and u can wash and buff ur floors and even ur truck. definately a multitasker

I stand corrected.....If you often drink smoothies out of a garbage can sized glass a gas auger can be a multi tasker
