Spreader Bars, am i missing something?

i made a spreader bar, and could get fish to look at the lures, but not take them. what is the deal?

I was thinking of trying one, but was concerned about having too much hardware in the water making the fish skittish. I know they work for perch in the great lakes, but the waters I fish are much clearer. I usually have to drop to 2lb from 4 on my jigging sticks to get action about halfway though the winter.

are you talking like a wire spreader bar like on crappie rigs that hold the hooks out to the side of the main line?
