Jiffy gas cap Question
« on: Jan 02, 2005, 02:58 PM »
Has anybody also had trouble with their gas caps on their augers? My Jiffy is only a year old and it already needs the O ring on the vent replaced. I had another Jiffy before and it seems like the gas caps are always leaking either on the vent O ring or the main gasket where it screws on. I guess I feel Jiffy could come up with something better than this. There has to be a material that is more durable somewhere. Any ideas?? Thanks and tight lines!

I just bought a new Jiffy gas cap that cost a small fortune, that was supposed to end the leakage problems, and so far no leaks.  It's black plastic with a silver screwdown vent.  Unfortunately, it uses an O-ring too..............

They do not last very long at all I am sad to say. What I did with my father's Jiffy is I found an old lawnmower and took the cap off of that. They are already vented. Then what I did (and still do on his, Mine is brand new this year and has not broken down yet) is I took a sandwich bag and unscrewed the gas cap. I placed the cap over the sandwich bag and screwed it back down. No Leaks!  I found that occasionally the bag would dissapear, so I just put it in my gear bag.

Between the cold temps and the gas/oil the O rings get brittle. The only thing I found to prevent it was to barely tighten the vent screw .... tighten just enough to prevent leaking. When you crank down on the vent screw you twist and compress the O ring.

Yep.  Noticed the same problem.  I too replaced my original cap (lastyear) with the black plastic one w/the silver vent and so far have not had a problem.  As Lonewolf pointed out, it is best to tighten the vent screw only enough to prevent leakage.  I used to torque it down pretty tight and shortly thereafter, the leaks began.

On most of the caps you can replace just the o ring there is a clip on the under side of the cap that lets you do this. You can go to the hardware store or automotive (NAPA) and get extra o rings. Like what was sadi the  gas/oil and hot cold make them brittle.
just don't over tighten them when you close them.

Thats what I do too .O rings are cheap .I been wondering why folks keep buying new caps instead of just the 0 ring . :-\

I'm guessing your talking about the leaking during transport with the auger on its side. What I do is take a piece of plastic from a shopping bag, not a plastic grocery bag but a thicker bag from some of the clothing retailers, take a piece big enough to cover the hole and lay it over the cap hole and screw the cap on over it. It will seal the cap and no leaks.

I lost the 0 ring in mine last year and just emailed jiffy about the new vent cap. Its 8.95$  that seems an aweful lot to pay for a cap so i appreciate the post about the plastic bag trick.

Thank for the replies guys but I still think if a guy spends $400 plus dollars for a top end auger a person shouldn't have to put a plastic bag on the thing to keep it from leaking gas..... Well maybe a Jiffy rep will read this post and work on a solution.....  ???

Not wanting to be the voice of reason, but I have used my Jiffy for 3 years and havent had any problems. And I think I would check out new o-rings if I had those certain problems.

This isn't really a Jiffy Problem. The engines for the Jiffy Drills and many other brands are manufactured by Tecumseh Products.

Replaced mine on my strikemaster after 4 yrs. Can't complain because that is all I ever had to replace besides a new plug.
