I use a plastic bag and put it in my pocket, so it doesn't freeze. I like to use dead bait. It using live bait, I have a Frabill insulated bait bucket.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

If you're really worried about space and weight, use a big zip lock bag and poke holes in the top.  Attach a rope to it and drill a hole to put the zip lock in and attach the rope to something so it doesn't get away.  The lake water should oxygenate them and the water will not freeze like it does when you use a bait bucket. They should stay healthy for quite a while.
A day without fishing is a day wasted.

Frabill also makes a small type cooler with air pump attached, also has a net basket inside of the cooler, works great and its the size of a Lunch box

I used to use a Bait Puck 2 but I just noticed that my new one has little holes in the top. They easily hold a dozen crappie minnows, maybe 1/2 dozen shiners.

Thanks for all of the responses.  I made something this morning that I will try.  I put a small coffee can inside of a larger coffee can with styrofoam in between the cans. Each can can have a lid.  If this isn't satisfactory I will try a plastic coffee can.  I want cheap!!  I will have to buy some coffee in a plastic container first though.   Beau2
have gotten a container from an ice cream shop that the frozen strawberries come in - about a 1 gallon size. also a bucket that the slush comes in. wrapped the smaller bucket in cellophane and placed in the larger bucket. used spray insullation foam in between. must do this in layers - little at a time otherwise the foam at the bottom will not expand and dry. you can try using broken pieces of foam. have not tried that. best part - pails are free.
