You wont find me on the ice that early. Unless I was camping from the night before. I get out about half hour before you can see.

What are you fishing for?
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Not if you're up anyway and the wife/gf is still sleeping...might as well go.

5am is not too early by any means especially if you have a newborn in the house.    Child Wakes up at 330, feed, burp, change diapie, back to sleep hopefully by 415.   On the  Ice by 5 and the wife things your an amazing husband for doing such.

There's no such thing as too early as long as there's fishing involved  ;D

I have to agree....There's plenty of time to enjoy a nice cuppa joe til the fish start biting.

That has been my schedule that past few months!!!  3 month old at home...  been hitting the ice around 5:30 ish and then im back home early.  If not for that I would be able to go as much as I have.  Crappie and gills hit that early, and the bite it usually slow by 9:30-10 anyways.  No luck with pike that early though....

How can there be such a ting as too early? Nothing wrong wit getting prime position, holes drilled and sack set as well as a bunch of crappies on ice before others arrive.... Plus it is a bonus for you to let your piecve of ice quiet down before the sunrise bite begins....

I have always wanted an official fish clock, but the fish won't give
them up to humans. It would be nice to know how early they start their day
and end it too.
Too bad the fish aren't talking

5AM, do it frequently, maybe 530 is more like it. Take plenty of nice fish in heavily hit areas and can take home a great meal before the dawn patrol arrives and even know I was there. Just fits easily into the way my life is going at present. One can easily catch fish around the clock if you put in the time and are willing to experiment and figure it out

Why the heck do you get up at two to duck hunt? Even the toughest, nastiest muck up to your waist, poison sumac, mosquito infested cattail inhabited duck hole doesn't require me to get up THAT early!
You may call me crazy, but crazy catches fish!

If you hunt swamps or State Land in S E Michigan then you get up that early to get a spot! MI allows dekes to be set at 3am and lots of fellas do. You sleep in and you may miss out around here anywho!

I like for my first jig to go down the whole right about as the sun is coming up. Makes for a nice mental picture, if nothing else.

You won't get many bites until dawn unless you are fishing for crappie or 'eyes but I would go for it.  Better to be on the ice than to be sitting on the couch.
A day without fishing is a day wasted.
