Jigger Totter Tip downs!!
« on: Jan 22, 2011, 12:11 PM »
Just received my jigger totter ice rod tip down in the mail today. At first I was very skeptical before ordering... ::) ::) I was wrong. Very nice weapon for the arsenal.  I tried fitting every rod I own (15)etc. St. Croix, Thorne Bros., Lightning Rod, and all fit very snug regardless of length.  Must have!!  I will keep you updated as I do my youtube review! Here is the link:

Anyone else own one of these?

I think it is being used as a rod float or just to float the tilting rod?  Not really sure?  It does float the tilting rod.  Don't want to experiment with my rod though ;D

I think it's to keep the bare metal from freezing to your bare hand in freezing conditions.(like a tongue to a flag pole) ;)

Nice setup btw.

The foam is in case the clip falls off the rod and into your hole, it will float so you don't lose it...

Can you leash the rod to the unit with something without inhibiting balance/  So that a pike can't take your rig for a swim.

These are designed for smaller rods 24"-26" even though it is possible to put longer rods into them. I think if someone is on a lake w/ big pike or whatever a real loose drag is in order...I think.

I've used 'em on trout to almost 3lbs w/ the shorter rods and never felt like I was going to lose a rig in the hole...

They would be really tough to lose down a hole...most of the  pressure is pulling it down rather than across the ice towards the hole.  These things work very, very well.  No need for spring bobbers, and any rod becomes a great deadsticking rod.

That is what I thought. I tried to make one with a yard sign holder as previously posted.  Was not the same.  Probably not difficult to reproduce but a lot easier just to order and not priced that bad either.  Im surprised this thing hasn't gone commercial yet. ie, frabill, etc. ???  When they do you can expect a $15-20 increase so now is the best time to buy.

These are more of a rod holder than a Tip Down.  A true tip down gives the fish about 2 feet of line with little to no resistance.  These only bob a little and keep constant pressure on the rod.   You can see that the fish bite and release them right away.

Nice idea but not a true Tip Down.

It can be called a balanced deadstick or full sized swivel bobber, but most of all it's a great rod holder on a teeter totter.  You might have to do a little bit of tweaking to get the rod holder clip to get onto a regular rod seat, however it can be adjusted slight for a majority size of tennesee reel handles.

If one were to put a lightweight tipdown rod on it, I believe you could accomplish very similar results with tipdowns.  The weight of a ice fishing rod and reel is just too much of a balancing.  Maybe a longer rod and a higher platform for this might provide the necessary weight and leverage distribution.

It does offer a slight change in the ice rod holder aspect.

Some pixs to go with an idea...

I set this up just so that the rod butt is tension set just so on the Jigger Totter cross bar - tip down wannabe set up.  If the bite is missed, the rod will swing into the teeter totter mode, thus jigging the lure so so.  Then if I get another bite on the lure, I give it the hook set.

If you want to copy me, just put some kind of pipe tubling attached to butt of rod to extend short handle to touch the cross bar of the Jigger Totter.

Just used the jigger totter ice rod holder on open water at a local dam perch fishing. They have a chain link fence up on the spillway and the legs of the jigger totter slid perfectly into the fencing. I was using 5 1/2' and 6' ultra light casting rods. The rod holders performed just like on the ice. Lite bite detection, balance and easy hook setting were just as fun there as on the ice. The only problem I ran into was the wind picked up really bad as is common for this particular spot and I had to abort the jigger totters go back to the old method of sticking the rod handles in the fence.

If the rod holder cross bar could be made to fit a rod with one of those tiny casting reels on top it would act just like a tip-down. The weight of the spinning reel is hanging a few inches below the fulcrum point which causes it to teeter totter with an increase in resistance either forwards or backwards.

We continue to catch 3" avg perch on med action rods. I've had 5" perch tip the rod all the way to the ice. I too was aware of the increase of weight as the rod tipped, but, it has not been an issue whatsoever. One of my friends used his lake trout rods to catch light biting bluegill...

Well if this fighting basteege didn't pull it in the hole, I am pretty sure most fish won't.  My drag was really tight too (on accident), surprised he didn't snapped me off.  Tip up/ tip down /jig up/ jigger your stick don't care what you want to call them these are the best tool I have in my arsenal (aside from an auger).  They work.  This is my second season using these and it is a ton of fun to watch them in action.  Only way you will miss a hit is if you aren't looking at them.  Kudos to Hogger for coming up with an effective way to not only hold your rod, but actually be a strike indicator.  As we all know all the other rod holders out there are terrible and there is no way any of them should be used in the same sentence when talking about the jigger totter.
