Whats the point..
« on: Dec 31, 2010, 08:23 PM »
Has anyone gone with, or have had people fishing near them that catch fish, throw them on the ice and just leave them there till there done then throw the dead fish back in the hole? ive seen several people just put fish on the ice just as a tally, to me its a big time waste, then they complain about not catchin fish  :%$#!:

Wow not a big fan of any practices like that! If you keep a fish you better be man enough to clean it!

We see thousands of perch every year on late ice stacked up and frozen over in alot of holes where we fish. Guys that are fishing to deep and don't want to keep any small ones but they have brought them up to fast and killed them so they just make another hole and throw them in there.

If I get to go out there this year on the late ice I will try to take some pictures of it and post them up here. Makes alot of guys pretty mad since that is about the only really good perch fishery around our area.

I see it quite a bit as well.  They think if they throw the little ones down the hole that it will mess up their fishing.  When I see it, I like to remind them that the limit is 25 and that every fish they leave to die on the ice counts towards that limit.  I say if they catch a limit, but leave little ones on the ice to die it's time to call the DNR and report them for poaching.

They do it quite a bit on Lake St. Clair also - ticks me off! The old timers say that if you put a caught fish back down the hole it will spook the school below and they will leave the area.

If I were to see someone catch a fish and leave it lay on the ice and not pick it up when they left, Id be calling the proper authorities. To me its total BS and I think most states have laws against wanton waste.

If you are going to throw little fish on the ice, at least pick them up and put them in a garbage can when you are done!

Here in Nebraska there are wanton waste laws, and every LEO (law enforcement officer) is authorized to issue game citations. I've got numbers for the 800 Operation Game Thief line, regional conservation officers, and county sherriff's depts. all in my cell phone. I admit, I'll be the first to drop a dime, and shoot digital pics for evidence in cases like that. The state recently started an Open Fields and Waters program that opens up private land for hunting and fishing, and nothing turns landowners off faster than slobs and poachers. Given that 90 percent of the state is privately owned, a few jerks can ruin the outdoors experience for a lot of people...

I see it all the time on some of the channels I fish.  Old timers got a philosophy that when you put a fish down the hole it scares all the others so they just throw all the fish they catch on the ice.  It's a really dumb idea  :(

Fishgut I   you.We sould all have those no.# on our phones and not be afraid to use them.If the antis get their hands on pictures like that you can bet they will use them .Personally I would try to talk to the person(politely) and hope that I could reason with them but if not I would let the MNR do thier job.
Our hunting and fishing heritage is under constant attack and turning a blind eye is just another nail in the coffin.
If we all think before we act and police ourselves our sport (lifestyle) will be around for years to come.
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

What a waste. I once seen a man who would catch "hammerhandles" pike and rip a gill out with his index finger and throw them back laughing. Well about the fourth time he did it I walked over to "introduce myself" and the pike flipped his head and opened his hand up about 4 inches long. He went to the hospital to get stitches and when he returned his shack was on shore with a note to not come back. Never seen him again. Don't understand idiots like this.. Steve

In my Opinion, Leaving fish on the ice is no different than leaving Trash on the the ice !  :%$#!: If I see a Raptor in the vicinity, I'll toss them a Dead shiner or a sucker carcass just so I can watch them enjoy the meal up close, because I know during the winter, the Opportunity for for an easy meal is few and far between for them ! With that being said, the wholesale piling of unwanted shorts on the ice is WRONG and should be reported ! I know if I see this type of ignorant and irresponsible behavior, I will alert the proper Authorities and hopefully they will learn the lesson the hard expensive way ! JMHO

I am with the others that say do something about it. I can't say how it would go with everyone but I have talked to a couple that was going to leave a few dinks on the ice. When I started saying something about it they started to get upset. Then I said PETA would have a field day with this one of them said I hate PETA. I told them once you decided to keep it they are your fish. Plant them in the garden if that is what you want but don't leave them. Just don't go up and bully them tell them why and if they don't want to leason then call the CO. Good luck out there and stay safe.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

I have left a few on the small ones on the ice before, I originally thought I would keep them but then caught some bigger ones, not often but it happens. I don't feel that they are going to waste as the next day they are always gone, between the eagles and fox tracks I see on the ice, hey they have to eat also, it's tough for them in the winter.

We eat everything we catch, the few we don't eat got fed to the neighborhood strays...I don't understand people catching just to kill them and leave them. its akin to shooting a deer and leaving it in the woods because it wasn't "big" enough....disgusting.
