crystal lake 12/ 26
« on: Dec 26, 2010, 05:04 PM »
me and 2 buddies went to crystal today setting up at 7 am . at around 745 my buddy dustin yells " **** just lost a huge one, snapped my leader"  while i was trying to start the heater in the shanty. 10 inutes later we get a flag slime dart . while walking back for the pliers the one next to it goes up, running fast pull it out after 15 minute fight and about 6 runs we pull out a 30 inch salmon 8.5 pounds then while fighting that one another flag is up 10 minutes later 30.5 inch 10 pound salmon . great day 2 salmon 3 pickrels . i will post pics after. now that my first salmon is off my list for ice fishing now onto walleye.

the ice was about 4 inchs a few spots had alittle more than 3 but was all black ice. the guy put a bigger bubbler out this year and its keepin the water open by the beach more than ever best bet is coming on by the launch. looked like the middle might have been open, but we didnt go out to it to find out. we fished water no deeper than 8 feet. the shiners veried in size, i trapped my own a few weeks back they ranged from 2 to 4 inchs long so i guess they could have been mediums. we didn't get alot of snow here but becareful out there as the ice may change thicknesses.i think we got about 6-7 inchs in our area

Ya, the trophy trout status has not really worked out well there. Fish it a lot. Pressure is heavy in the softwater. 16"+ Holdover trout are very rare, most often the larger trout caught there are broodstock. Icefishing there for me seems to produce mostly trout in the slot.

Those Salmon are a blast to catch. I would rather they would put more large fish like the salmon and less of those little trout.  I'd rather catch one Salmon than 30 of those little trout.

Was at crystal today. 4 to5 inches off launch. Long channel open water way out near other side. Dead slow one guy caught a big brown just before I got there. So I'm told.  Had I flag and one big hit early on dead stick. Almost took pole in water. Guess what it was on hawk.  That was it. Off the ice by one. Ice was getting real slushy. Took header into the slush com in off. Guys on shore saw the splash and thought I went thru. Plenty of solid ice underneath.
Looking at bigelow or black in am
