« on: Dec 05, 2010, 01:04 PM »
I have been wanting to head up to Grey Rocks and i have just heard that there used to be tiger muskie up there. I was wondering if anybody knows if they have a healthy population up there still becuase I would love to pull a monster muskie through the ice!! Also does anyone know how the ice is up there? ???

Well maybe someday i can get lucky and find that hog  ;D but ya i was looking on the game and fish website and the state record muskie was caught there weighing a wopping 30 some pounds. but that was back in the nineties. I can only dream of landing a muskie like that through the ice. also how is the bass fishing there?

oh that would be sweet if we could get some tiger muskie up here. I love wyoming but seems like as far as fishing goes they dont have as many larger game fish such as bass, pike, muskie and such. I like trout but i love the bigger fish  ;D

You might try Oliver Reservoir near Bushnell, Nebraska.  They stocked tiger muskies there until 2003 and have  stocked muskies several times since.  I haven't fished there in years, but think there are some muskies caught there during the open water season.  I'm sure there is a size limit on them, so be sure to check the rules if you go.  They would probably bite through the ice (if it ever gets here).  I guess there are bass and walleyes, too, just not sure how many.

Good fishing,
Keith

The guys down in Utah catch them on bigger baits, not tipped with anything.  Spoons, tubes, etc.

A good # of them are caught by people fishing tiny ice jigs though.  They feel some weight and then their line is broke... ;)

---

Another thing that happens often, is that you'll catch a perch or crappie and while you are reeling it up a tiger muskie will smack it.

Ya i assume i would fish fairly similar to how i would fish for pike. but i have had a couple times where i do feel a little weight i set the hook and next thing i know my line is broke  :-\ always makes you wonder what you lost. but thanks for the advice i will have to post how i do once i get out on the ice.

It''s Been 7-10 years since I fished Greyrocks, However I do recall jigging for eyes and occaisonally while bringing one up a muskie would be chasing it. Some that we saw were easily 40+" Not sure how long they live but if they are still alive they would be record breakers!

I bet that would be pretty cool watching those fish come up like that. did you ever have one actually strike. ?

Nope, we set aside a different pole with a huge mepps cyclops for when we would see them. It never seemed that they were interested in the lure though. I've never caught one. The closest I've been was with the net while netting an eye. Good luck when you go post pics!!!!

i went by there in the sping and i will tell you it isn't what it used to be. water levels were very low. i didn't fish it but my brother did last year and didn't get any thing, so i don't think i would make the trip, but you never know it might be good.

I stopped to look at Oliver about a week ago.  It is still low, but there is water there and the ice was just starting.  Part of the lake was frozen and part open.  I haven't heard any reports the past year or so.  A friend of mine once said "If you wait 'til you hear the news, you are too late!"

Good fishing,
Keith

ya i talked to my brother and he said that oliver used to be great but the water levels dropped and alot of fish died off. seems like all that is left is alot of carp. so if you like bowfishing that would be great but i dont know if i will try it for ice fishing. :-\
