First Ice Trout
« on: Nov 13, 2010, 05:14 PM »
I made it out this morning.

First lake I hit was Edith Lake.   Ice was 2 inches thick.  Alot of small, stunted perch and 8 or so hand sized brookies.

I left as it started to rain at around 11am this morning.  I went to check out another lake while I was in the area.

I checked out the Penn West Reservoir and it had about 1.5 inches of ice, no more.

I fished in 9 feet of water and no hit's or fished marked on the flasher.

Headed out to the Caroline area today with TravIce and one of his friends to check out some trout ponds. We found anywhere from 3/4" to 2 1/2" of ice, but it was really crappy and full of air pockets.

We did get into some Brookies on one lake, all about this size:

TravIce caught the most, landing 6-7, and this little guy:

All in all, a great day out, even if it rained several times. But no one fell through and we all caught some fish.

A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

Well done CMMahy and TravIce.

Nothing big this weekend.  Just a bunch of those little guys.

icecold#1, I wouldn't eat fish out of the Swan Hills, but if you're into it,  go right ahead.  There's some big brookies in those hills.

I've caught numerous 2-3 lbs, but I've heard stories of 6lb Brook trout not too far from Edith lake.

Ok we can't be the only couple guys that went ice fishing out here in Alberta.......where are the reports!!

I don't think you'll see anymore based on what we found for ice.  With the warm temps and the rain it sure made what little ice we did have turn to crap.  It sure was good to get out though, saw a couple of really good sized brookies come through, but all the ones caught were small.  Quite the surprise when I landed that stickleback though, he was to stubborn to let go of the maggot on my hook till it was to late...lol

Man those brookies sure have nice dark colors. Hopefully it stays cold all week like the forcast says and we can all get out and catch some fish.

What ponds are there around caroline with brookies besides Birch Lake? i would be interested in finding a couple differents ponds in that area. Thanks

Here's a couple more from yesterday.

I caught 7 of these guys:

While Travice hooked into a couple of beauties:

18" and 3 3/4lbs. The second one put up a huge fight with multiple runs, and was bigger than this guy, but as soon as it's head broke the surface of the water it gave one last thrash and broke the line. It would have gone somewhere between 4 and 4 1/2lb.

Ice on most lakes that we checked in the Caroline area was around 5", but some lakes had a noticeable layer halfway through. Lots of snow on the ground and most side roads weren't plowed, I got stuck a few times in my 2WD Half ton and need the chains to get up one hill.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

What an awesome morning of fishing.  Hooked into a couple of those beauties, had a couple more checking things out, and landed the one 8-10" er.  The fight with the bigger one was awesome, my drag was just screaming away.  Its a cheep reel, and I was scared the drag wouldn't hold up.  Too bad about losing it at the hole, but I got to see it up close and personal, and I have a witness...LOL
