does a handheld GPS show you the depths of a lake? or anything that would be helpful to find the depths/ dropoffs in a lake?

NO....GPS is a position finding device, meaning it will find a specific location on land or lake......only on the surface.....not how deep the lake is.  Suggest you look under the Equipment section or the Electronic gear section at the bottom of the category lists.....look for information on depth recorders, or Vexilar, or "Lookdown" or Marcum.  Plenty of info on finding depth and locating fish.

There are gps out there that show the maps but you usually need a card such as navionics or hotspot's to show the indepth contour lines.

get a garmin rhino or something that is compatable w navionics hotmaps.  go to gander mntn or bass pro and tell them dudes to hook u up w a portable that does hotmaps,...u can even get the program on your phone if it's like a gps droid.   hotmaps will give u contour lines like you want,...I still use my vex or hand held sonar 2 actually measure depth to get the spot exactly right,....the hand held gps has made fishing so much more fun for everyone who tags along w me

I have the Delorme, its screen is a little small but it works with the Navionics chip, takes 2 batteries, and works pretty good.

They will show depth with a card, but it depends on the lake level and other factors as to how accurate the card map is. I have found them sometimes to be off a few feet in depth in certain areas of the lake while looking for drop offs. If your lake has been low then it will change everything. The GPS will give you a good starting point and then you can make your spots and find the even under the snow. Before buying a card make sure it has the lakes you fish on it. Most places will let you check it before you buy.

There has to be a way to input a lake map into a custom GPS map. there are some fancy lake maps out there but is there a way to input them (even crudely) into a map editor?

If you go on Google earth you can find the Longitude and latitude and enter it in manually. Just do a test first on a known object on dry land to make sure you are getting the same numbers as Google. There are different settings that will through you off.
