Ling in the spring or summer ?
« on: Mar 18, 2010, 09:37 AM »
Just wondering if Ling are catchable in the spring or summer. I've never seen one caught off a boat. How do you fish for Ling ?

Thanks

They are catchable. I have talked to guys who have gotten into them casting bait from rocky points in the evenings. I've caught a few by accident from my boat but know of a few guys who anchor their boats in bays and off rocky points and fish for them just like they do when ice fishing with bait and jigging vertical in the evening and after dark. Bigger fish are found around Firehole and Confluence, but you can catch numbers all the way to the state line and beyond.

Here's a video that should help you with the basics. Same principles would apply fishing from an anchored boat, minus the tip-ups ;D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1GoLWt6iGE

Spring time is a great time for them. Big horn river is good this time of year. I personally think the ling caught out of the river taste a lot better than the lake caught ones.

I've seen my dad catch two out of the boat. One jigging on a rocky hump, one on a worm harness on a gravel bar. That's Boysen accidental catches though.

I've gathered some intel that says they do bite in the summer and well too.  Best fishing is at night and not too many people are out on their boats at night.  If you only fish during the day I doubt you will do very well unless very deep.  At night they come in as shallow as 15-20' (I bet they go shallower too).  (Talking about the Gorge here by the way)

Still the best fishing is probably in 30-50ft.  So if you can find a place next to shore with deep water.... there is plenty of that at FG you can prob catch them from shore in the summer.

I would fish areas next to really deep water.

Yellow tail is the closest place. I'll have to give it a try, I've heard there really nice table fare.

Do you just let bait sit on the bottom in 20 to 50 ft of water ? Worm, minnow

Thanks

Yep worm and or minnow will work.  Fish the bottom up to about 1 foot.  They like rocky areas... points are good to try.

Sucker meat is a real good choice also.

We catch them on Big Sandy for quite some time after ice out using a carolina rig and sucker meat.  Have caught a few even using a cottonball on a treble hook with crawfish scent.  Kinda catfish style if you wanna look at it that way,  i do.
