winter river walleyes
« on: Mar 04, 2010, 07:10 PM »
Just wondering if any of you fish smaller rivers for walleyes in the winter.  I heard now that the ice is melting and the water flow is a bit stronger that the river eyes really bight harder.  My question is where to start.  my River is mainly shallow with a few holes here and there.  in the winter do the walleyes head up stream to the deeper holes?  Do I have to wait for all the ice to melt off.  Currently only the dam area is open?  I have no clue what Im doing, but we all start somewhere.   any help  or tips would be awesome

From what I've been reading they should be fairly shallow right now getting ready for the spawn. I can't remember where I read it but try areas like rocky points that are close to sand, as this is where they will be spawning. Remember to use some bright coloured jigs cuz the water could be pretty murky from run-off.

I'm headed out this weekend to do some walleye fishing on the river as well. Hope this was of some help to ya!

Our general walley season is closed now.  For open water on the river, they'll be in about the tail races of the dam or hanging out on the wing dams.  They should begin to congregate more so there.
For more information read my MN nice journal

The only river that I know of that is open right now is the Mississippi ? I fish it all the time.Live just a stones throw from it.The dam at Lyxnville is open today and I would bet that Genoa is open also.Fishing the river is not very easy to explain ,there is so many things and patterns going on all in the same day.Just try to be safe and take your time and enjoy. The ducks and eagles are starting to migrate into the area. The sand pike and walleyes should be on a good bite right now.I'm still ice fishing and don't chase them for a couple of weeks yet I hope!!!!!!
