red river fish
« on: Feb 18, 2010, 10:04 PM »
Hey all ,love your forum .I'm new here and pretty new to ice fishing[my son and I love it] I'm planning to go this weekend and was thinking about trying some new locations. We've had good luck at stephenfield and rock lake catching northerns.I was thinking about trying the red river for walleye somewhere south of Winnipeg. Is there anyone that could give some clues as to where to try,or is this a waste of time ? is there walleye in this part of the river?             Fishing blind I have no flasher  maybe next year . Any advice would be appreciated.

Lockport is great for up to 50 saugers per angler per day. I usually catch a few walleyes mixed in. No monsters but steady action!

Lockport is one of North Americas most famous fishing destinations. It's a small town, located on the Red River, approximately 30 km North of Winnipeg.  Some of the most famous fishing shows have filmed there, including 'The In Fisherman', 'Bob Izumi', 'Don Lamont', etc, etc.  It's famous for huge channel catfish and great overall fishing. I hope this helps!

I've had some luck at sugar island in the past, but nothing this year. Are you guys fishing at lockport itself or sugar island. Also what are you gents using to catch all these saugers? I'm normally just using a jig with minnow and drop to the bottom and reel up a bit. I've caught a couple but nothing like 50 Saugers in a day.

i live near u.s border bout 6 miles from the river and there are no shacks that i know of by letellier this year because they are building a new bridge there, maybe there are some further north of that or south not sure, you could try at st jean, where the plum river flows into the red, a guy told me it was good there, mind you he doesnt fish hes just heard that from others

50 sauger per angler per day sounds good but a few years ago me and my brothers would catch up to 250 saugers per person per day, and that was just during the morning. the trick is to use a bait that never needs to be changed or replaced. aslong as you go on a day that they are in a feeding frenzy im sure you could beat 250. we used the white part of a saugers belly meat with skin and scales still attached. it is real tuff and almost never comes off the hook. ive also had bad days there with just 2 or 3 in half a day. during september my personal best best was 360 saugers in the late night. but beware people i know people who have been busted with nearly 100 fish over the limit and they paid for it big time. I on the other hand like to give the fish another chance.

thanks for the tip LEVISTA. Our hands were so cold hooking minnows and then washing them off that we almost had to stop. I will try your trick!
