Plastic Gas Tank Repair (slow leak)
« on: Nov 29, 2004, 10:57 PM »
I have a slow gas leak around the male end (fuel line outlet) of my gas tank of my ice auger and was wondering if there was any type of adhesive that I could use to paste or apply in the area of the leak.

Any info would be very much appreciated!!!

Mod A: What type auger is it?  Why not see if you can replace the tank?  I'm assuming it's plastic and is more than likely pretty cheap.

If you can't get a new one, clean it up good and try Marine Tex. The stuff is rugged. Just don't get it on anything you don't want it on.

Jiffy replaced my tank free although it was 3 mo. over warranty period.  Have had no problems since.

Mod_auger, leak can be a royal pain in the rear.  Although this isn't going to solve "your" problem, thought it might be worth mentioning for leaks in general.  When the vent starts to leak on the gas cap, I made new gaskets by taking a small sheet of gasket material and punching .22 holes in the material followed by a .38 punch (or thereabouts)   So now I have a small gasket to install on the vent screw on top of the cap.  Engine shop showed me this trick instead of replacing the small little rubber gasket that always gets "bunged" up.  Made several and put them in my small lure carrier I bring ice fishing.  I'm using the sizes above as a guideline, when I made them up I used empty shell casings off my reloading bench.  Whatever was handy and seemed to work at the time.   ;D  Good luck with the gas line leak....Augers are so expensive nowadays it's worth taking a few minutes to keep them up to speed.
