Cabela's Hamburg
« on: Jan 31, 2010, 05:25 PM »
Just got back from Cabela's and wanted to give a heads up. They have some sales on ice fishing lures...up to 40% off on certain lures...Lindy/JR and the like. Chubbies for $4.09 (beat that). Also a few finders on sale in the Bargin Cave...HB Ice45 for $300 (floor demo). So if there are a few things that you don't have/need, it may be worth the effort to take a look at what they have.

I went to the Hamburg store a week ago and was very disappointed by their lack of selection on ice fishing gear.  Basically it was just one five-foot long shelf and a small pile of sleds.  I asked one of the clerks why there wasn't more ice fishing gear and he indicated that they had already shipped out their stock of ice gear to colder climate stores (Maine, Minnesota, etc.).  Unless you are looking for something specifically mentioned by Scavenger, I'd skip it altogether.

One more caution - the stuff in the bargain cave area are items that have been returned, refurbished or discontinued.  The discontinued stuff is probably OK, but I'd be wary of the returns and repairs - especially with the electronic gear.  Never know what someone did to that stuff before they returned it...

I went there yesterday and picked up a couple of St Croix rods for 12.00 each and jigging raps for a litlle over 3 bucks. I will agree though overall there ice fishing supplies are very poor.

The guy at Cabela's said that they get most of their ice gear in mid December then they start shipping it out in mid-January to their northern stores.  Not much chance for us PA guys...   :(

I'm lucky that I have atleast 6 or 7 small shops by me but many don't carry much unless its something popular. It is nice that they can/ will usually order something for me if I ask and its something their supplier carries. May cost me a bit more $$$ but if its keeps em around I'm not gonna complain

The eastern sports and outdoor show has extremely limited or no ice fishing gear at their show. It's not worth the drive and admission fee unless you are looking for something other than ice gear.

I'd agree with Bean, not much as far as icefishing gear goes. Last year by chance I did find some rods. I forget who the company was, but they were set up on the left hand side just as soon as you walked into the fishing area from the main hall. They were storm rods and were from L to H actions. I bought all four that they had, but that was about all I saw.

I mentioned to a couple of the vendors and guides that there is a pretty big interest in icefishing in this area and that maybe they should start to offer products and trips to the patrons of the show. Most seemed pretty disinterested.

I can book a trip for deer or go up north for pike/walleye in the summer, but I'll be danged if anyone offered any sort of gear or trips for icefishing.

tomahawker right now your best bet is to hope you can find some shops in your area with some gear or order from the big places on-line or by mail order.

tomahawker, if u don't have a Gander Mountain there, I would make the drive to the one in Johnstown to find some ice gear. It is your best bet, they have more than my more local Greensburg location. Good Luck!

I gave up on the sportsman's show at the farm show complex years ago as its mostly geared towards hunting and flea market type vendors. Not worth the wasted gas, admission fees, overpriced food and crowd. I kind of gave up on cabelas also. I won't make a special trip up anymore for the ice fishing stuff. If I need something I know Cabelas will have I'll stop by. I'm much better off ordering what I need online.

Uncle Joes woodshed has a little bit of stuff not much. As far as the Harrisburg show goes, I went there last year lookin for a new jiggin rod and only 1 booth had them so i bought one. I hear that Gander Mountain in Johnstown has a good selection of gear but never checked it out for myself. I am makin a trip to Johnstown next Wed. and plan to stop and see for myself. I will post my findings.

Thats why I don't bother going anymore.  If you are looking to book a trip, by all means, go to the outdoor show in Harisburg.  I plan my own trips, and if I wanted any of the other overpriced crap that they are selling, I'd buy it online or from an infomercial.  I haven't gone to the harrisburg show since the early 80's.

Stopped by Gander in Johnstown earlier this week and except for augers they have almost no ice fishing gear. It seams like we're stuck ordering from catalogs and paying an arm and a leg for S&H

You can order from FishUSA and pay next to nothing for shipping and get your order in a day or two  ;)

Don't get me wrong, it'd be nice to have any place near by with a decent selection of gear but we really don't  :-\ Atleast FishUSA is here in PA and one of the few places left with a halfway decent selection since Peterson shut down

I'll add a plug for FishUSA... Timely shipping, ACCURATELY priced shipping, and good prices. I purchase almost all my steelhead terminal tackle and a lot of my ice fishing gear from them. In my experience, they are quick to answer any email questions that I have sent... ALso, you are supporting the little guy.

Cabela's BOO

Took the kids to see all the mounts and fish........ice fishing gear was on sale.......all the rod/reel combos were tossed into a bin--what a mess--didn't see any St. Croix's, I would have grabbed them up

In any event, the kids picked out a bunch of ice fishing lures

Got to the counter to pay for the items......noticed nothing was at sale price

I asked the woman at the register what the deal was and she asked what should the prices be??

There were about 20 items or so......I go, I don't know........I said screw it and started to leave--ticked off

I stopped and went to customer service.......the guy there had no clue--not even sure he knew where the ice fishing gear was......so, he asks what are the prices........I gave him 10 items out of 20 items that should have been on sale.....saving roughly 12 bucks.......I tell him to give me a pen.......so I had to go and get the sale price because the lazy dude just kept staring at me with the: well, what do you want me to do about it look on his face......

So, I tote my kids back to the ice fishing isle........I get the correct prices and head back to CS......I have to stand in line......OK......fina lly get back to my lazy guy and he goes, I need your drivers license--I go why?  He said he has to refund the items that are not priced correctly......then re-ring them up at the sale price......I was livid......he starts and it is taking forever.......I look at him and go nevermind......just return everything......He goes, Everything......I say yes, this is bullcrap......everythi ng.......so, I got my 52 dollars back.........whatever. .......I hate cabelas......going to the store is a pain in the butt....most of the folks in the Hamburg store don't know much about fishing......and would be better suited working elsewhere........there have been multiple times I have had problems with the store.......this was the first time in over a year that I went in there......after swearing I'd never be back--but the kids wanted to go, so we went.........

FishUsa is a great place to shop.......and I certainly do my best to shop elsewhere before I go to cabelas....I'll even spend a little more just to not use cabelas

The IS sponsors have plenty of gear they know what we want and stock plenty of it.
If fishing is a sport are we considered athletes?
