Looking for a little advice...
« on: Feb 10, 2010, 10:27 AM »
I have one of those stories here and am looking for honest objective advise concerning Jiffy and my new 3hp STX Pro.

After looking around and reading and talking to a few friends who run older Jiffy's I decided to get the new 10" STX Pro model just before Christmas. It fired up well but only drilled a few holes before it started running sluggish and not up to full rpm. I contacted the Jiffy tech. dept. who were very helpful and said it would run better after a "break-in". I followed the advise by running half throttle for 15 min. then a cool down and 3/4 throttle for 15 min. changed the plug, added a tank of fresh gas and still had the same perfomance. I returned it to Cabela's and they ordered up a replacement which i just got yesterday. Started it up and dang-it if the shaft doesnt turn no matter how much throttle i give it. :( I really thot I was getting the best auger out there and still like some of the Jiffy features but Im starting to think I need to look at another brand. Any of you guys heard of similar stories latly? Thanks for your input.

When you buy something like a 2 cycle motor new out of the box, be it a new chainsaw or what ever, the carburetor needs to be adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing, most are just setup and sold by sales people. Not the machines fault. Your first one probably just needed the high speed screw adjusted correctly.

X2 for the carb adjustment.... I wouldn't say it's a Jiffy problem they just all can't be tuned for cold weather in a 65 degree factory

I agree with the carb adjustement.  The factory has no idea where the auger is going to end up, so they cannot set the carb appropriately for the altitude, temp, etc that the auger will be used in.  If you are pretty handy you can probably set the carb yourself, otherwise a good small engine shop will be able to do it for you.  However since you brought up that maybe you might consider a different brand now, I would strongly consider an Eskimo.  I went from a Jiffy to an Eskimo, and I can't see myself ever going back, they are one hell of an auger.  Do a little research, but I don't think you are going to find many people that have anything bad to say about an Eskimo auger.

FWIW

Also one thing about the non-Jiffy's is that if you ever mess up your drill assembly all the clockwise drills are more or less interchangable (may need some fabricating skill?)

With the jiffy you are stuck with limited replacement drill assemblies
