how deep for lakers
« on: Dec 23, 2009, 01:45 PM »
Just woundering how deep you are setting tipups
for lake trout. Do you use a flasher then go to the depth
or do you just have a favored hole
Im fishing on Lake Champlain and local ponds in the
Adirondacks.

Do you go just off the bottom like pike?

Thanks for the help

It varries from lake to lake, I tend to look more for bottom structure than depth, A sharp drop off, a plateua that sits several feet of the bottom ect.  Most of the time I fish right off bottom, but have seen them caught all through the water colum to right up under the ice depending on where the smelts are schooling, but later in the year come march they tend to run up into the shallow water chasing smelt and other bait fish at least here in maine
Its not a passion its an obsession

Most of the time I've fished them around 5-15 fow. Later in the ice season usually though.

Hey I was just wondering the same.  I read a bunch, but have never fished for lakers. There are also alot of decent pike and whitefish in the lake I will be going to on Jan 1st.  Was hoping someone can put me in the right direction.  The lake I will be fishing on has a max depth of 135 ft and that is near the steepest drop off. there are 2 mid lake humps at 50 and 70 ft. 5 inlet/outlets and a gradual flat. not sure what the bottom substrate is.  The lake hold lakers upto 20ish pounds, but 7-10 seems to be the average.

Any help would be great.

thanks
Mark

Mark,
I would start off by saying it's a whole lot easier if you have a vexilar. 2nd I'd start out on the 2 humps. The places I fish, those humps are like the perfect depth. Start jigging near the bottom but you may end up fishing the entire water column.
Hard to beat a 3" white glow tube jigs tipped with sucker meat. There are plenty of other setups that work but that will get you going.

Sometimes the best is right on top. However, usually I fish 3 feet off bottom in 40-60 FOW. Those humps sound like the perfect spot.

I got this guy on a hump in 8' of water next to a channel dropoff. Most any change in  bottom contour is a good place to start.
