East wind?? and a full moon
« on: Feb 20, 2010, 10:51 PM »
How much attention do you guys pay to wind direction??  I am sure we  have all heard the old saying wind from the west fishing is best... wind from the east fishing is least.  Is this an old wives tale or does it have more to do with barometric pressure?  I have always been the type to get out as often as possible regardless of the wind direction (more worried about wind speed)  Just looked at the weather forecast for our 4-day trip to peck and it's going to be beautiful out (30's all 4 days) but 6-8 mph winds from the east.  Just curious if anyone has noticed a significant difference. Full moon as well this weekend which seems to be good for the walleye bite by my recollection.  Opinions?

I think it makes a difference.  Not a big enought difference that you will or will not catch fish, but catch numbers and size can increase with weather patterns.  I read a book a few years back about fishing for trophy fish and the author emphasized the moon cycle.  Full or not the more important factor was rise and set.  Accourding to this guy if you look at moon rise and set combined with sun rise and set you have something going.  Barometric pressure was also a major factor for the author.  He believe with all elements combined, for example a moon rise or moon set within 10 minutes or so of a sun rise/sunset with the ideal barometric pressure most often with lead to loose lips for real trophy fish.......
All that said I have experimented.  I don't have or even know how to get my hands on a barometer so everything I have done has been in relation to sun rise/moon rise or sunset/moonset.  All the tables or times are on the web.  Just look up the times on whatever day.  I have noticed a spike if you can hit both within minutes or each other.
So far as wind.  I think a guy on here said on Daily the wind out of the north sucks...I would agree it definitely slows things down

barometers are readily available on some watches cabelas catalog has a mini weather station that has a barometer, an anemometer, altimeter, thermometer, and chronograph for about $70  or if you want to go for an old school barometer scientific american catalog has a glass blown one that you fill with water and when the barometric pressure drops water runs out the spout,  its  like a sealed teakettle with just the spout having the opening 8) I have one

It is also believed that the most activity in animals & fish ect. are when the moon is directly above or below the earth. Even more than moon rise or set. Not sure about the wind, though it does make sence.

MOST OF THE HIGHER END GARMIN GPS UNITS SUCH AS THE COLORADO 400 AND THE OREGON 400 OR HIGHER ALL HAVE BUILT IN BAROMETERS THAT WILL EVEN GRAPH THE PRESSURE PATTERNS OVER TIME.  THEY ALSO HAVE HUNT/FISH TABLES AND SUN & MOON RISE/SET TABLES.  I JUST STARTED USING MINE TO GRAPH PRESSURE CHANGES AND ON PECK BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS, FISHING STARTED OUT GOOD WITH A STEADY TO SLIGHTLY FALLING BAROMETER, BUT BY MID-WEEK, THE BAROMETER STARTED FALLING FAST AND FISHING LITERALLY SHUT OFF AS A STORM MOVED IN.  WANTED TO STAY UNTIL THE PRESSURE STABILIZED TO SEE HOW THINGS CHANGED, BUT WORK COMMITMENTS WOULDN'T ALLOW IT.  WE WERE CATCHING ABOUT 15 FISH A DAY EARLY ON AND ON THE LAST NIGHT AND FOLLOWING DAY, WE DIDN'T CATCH ANYTHING!  THIS WAS BASED OVER 5 DAYS OF FISHING.  ALSO FISHED YELLOWTAIL AND THE BAROMETER WAS SLIGHTLY FALLING DURING THE MORNING AND WE PICKED UP QUITE A FEW LING AND WALLEYE.  BY EARLY AFTERNOON, THE PRESSURE STARTED DROPPING AS A STORM STARTED MOVING IN AND FISHING ONCE AGAIN COMPLETELY SHUT-OFF.  DURING BOTH OF THESE EVENTS, THE FISH/HUNT TABLES SAID POOR TO OK FISHING. I DIDN'T CHECK THE SUN/MOON RISE/SET TABLES, BUT I'M GOING TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND SEE WHERE THEY WERE AT.  AS FOR WIND, IT WAS COMING STEADILY OUT OF THE NORTH OR NORTHWEST ON PECK, DUE WEST ON YELLOWTAIL.  DON'T KNOW IF THIS HELPS ANYONE, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING.  GOOD FISHING!

Heard it screws with a dogs nose and ability to find birds too.  You have any experience with that Fishinwith britts?

I haven't noticed it affect my dogs' noses.  However, guys sometimes tend to get in a rut as to how they hunt their favorite spots, and an east wind isn't typically the prevailing wind direction.  Consequently, guys can forget to adjust and end up hunting with the wind instead of into it, which puts the dogs at a disadvantage.

That's a good observation. I wouldve never thought of that. You know, I frequent a hunting dog website as I'm thinking of getting a griff, and none of those guys thought of that when that question was brought up.
