Jiffy stx pro- clutch problem
« on: Feb 02, 2010, 11:09 AM »
My friend has a Jiffy STX pro, 2hp., that is one year old.
It seems that the clutch is always engaged, that is, when you start it up,
the blade starts to turn right away. It turns at idle speed, and will not stop at idle unless you
push it down on the ice.

It just started doing that one day, it has worked correctly in the past.

It is not frozen up from water, he had it in the house for a couple days.
Anyone else ever have this problem?, if so, what did you do about it?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That's how my Jiffy Legend started acting. In my case it was a broken clutch spring.
To check yours - carefully remove the clutch housing without tearing the gasket (or have a replacement gasket handy) and check the condition in there. In mine, I managed to remove the housing several times without replacing the gasket.
If it is your springs, let people here know and they may be able to offer advice on alternative to factory springs. I replaced mine with Mini-Z snowmobile springs for about $13. Jiffy does not sell the springs by themselves, I believe.
Good luck,
Glen

I have a 2hp stealth that did this from day one. The dealer told me that some of them would do this until they break in a bit. When the auger was four years old I emailed Feldman Engineering and told them what was happening and that someday it was going to catch on the cuff of my coveralls and rip into my leg. I had to start mine with the blade cover on and let it idle this way until it warmed up. I would shut it off between holes to be safe. They mailed me a shipping label for UPS and I sent the powerhead to them and it came back repaired. I would think they would repair it because of the safety factor. It would be worth a try anyway.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Either the clutch pack itself is damaged or the idle is up too far just to the point where the clutch catches. If you had a tach you could tell what the idle is. You can't adjust the mixture to bring the idle down on the new auger but there is an idle speed adjustment.

The STX Pro units have a 2 year warranty on the transmission (Gear Case).

I would give Jiffy a call and it should be covered under warranty.
It must be ICE FISHING SEASON, my wife has increased my "Life Insurance Policy"

Thanks , all, for the information.

My friend called Jiffy, and they said to either send the powerhead to them , or they would send him a new clutch assembly.

Jiffy told him, that they have been having problems with the clutchs, but now they are buying the parts from China, and they are working better.

Sheesh! Chinese junk does work sometimes, I guess.

But it doesn't put Americans to work........

Thanks again.ice in T
