Cooney
« on: Dec 27, 2009, 04:09 PM »
Went today and got there at about sun up and fished until about 11:30-Noon. We got 1 bite all day. I saw a lot of people on the other side of the lake. Don't know how they did but it had to have been better than me. Fished from 8-15fow. I would like to know if anybody did any good today. I haven't been able to find them up there thru the ice in years.

havent fished it this year but last year was the same story for me.  skunked all times but one.  we slayed them when we finally caught them.  I had my only luck in about 8 fow fishing about a foot off the bottom.  the year befor that  i caught fish everytime i went out.  that was when the wife would go (bofor the baby)  and we would just fish till we had enough for dinner that night (2 or 3fish).  usually had enough for dinner within a hour.

Fished it yesterday on the south side. Showed up a little late and got skunked. This was my fourth time this year and limited out the first two times and caught 3 last week (all trout). It is always better with the first ice and then goes dead slow. Fishing in about 9 - 10 fow. Probably done for the year unless I just really want to go and don't have the time to travel somewhere else.

I fished Cooney yesterday from about 5 am till 11 on the north shore and did not even get a single bite tried about every jig and bait combo I could think of there were five of us fishing no bites all the way around, I went back today and fished fishermans point on the southside from  5 am till 2pm with the same luck as yesterday. i talked to a guy yesreday that limited out on sunday and caught two yesterday on the North shore. He said powerebait was the hot ticket, and the fish are deep.

Tried it again today. Was there from about 7:30 until about 12:30. Fished between the boat ramp and the dam at Marshall Cove. I had my typical day at Cooney. BLANKED. There were quite a few people out there. We fished fron about 12fow to 60fow. Ice is good. We found it from about 10"-16". We tried out my brothers new Eskimo pop up today and it worked good. Set up and take down was easy. Don't know how it works in the wind but that is what the Weather Channel is for. Oh well, I guess its better than sitting at home thinking that I should've went fishing.

I've had better luck on the South shore. Pinkish-red jigs worked well for me.

Went today, from 9-5. Caught two 3lb rainbows, one on a rainbow colored tear drop tipped with a wax worm, and the other on a pink jig head tipped with a wax worm as well. Fished at red lodge camp ground. Stopped at Fishermans and was packed all day but no one mentioned a catch of any sort. Was fishing in 8-10 fow. I was told that in 8-10 fow in fishermans as soon as the sun hits the hills, the ling are hitting hard on crawlers. Going to try and venture again tomorrow or wednesday. Oh and looking for someone to going fishing. Best of luck and hope this helps!

Went out late in the day Sunday by the Red Lodge Creek area?  fished with our new clam, two adults two kids.  We had three bites in the hour we spent out there.  9 year old caught nice rainbow after missing one good hit, probably a pounder.  I missed one too...fishing in 8-10 ft water on a orange jig with a wax worm.  Where is fishermans we want some ling?  Anybody fishing out at Fourchette Bay up at Peck, we are new to MT ice fishing..we go where the fish are.. ::)

Also, i heard "RUMOR" that chartreuse power bait was working for rainbows. As being the color of carp eggs, but not to sure if the carp are spawning yet or not. Please inform me if this is true!!!

I talked to my brother that was up there this morning and said he caught 2 small ling, 1 bullhead, 1 small trout and 1 crappie. 10-12fow using worms. He said the ice was still in good shape.

MY FATHER AND A FRIEND WENT TODAY FROM 8 TO 2 IN THE WILLOW CREEK ARM AND DIDN'T GET SO MUCH AS A BITE.  THEY MET SOMEONE FROM BILLINGS WHO WAS FISHING ALSO AND SAID HE HAD A BITE EARLY IN THE MORNING BUT MISSED IT.  THE TWO TIMES I'VE WENT HAVE BEEN IN THE EVENING AND NOT SO MUCH AS A NIBBLE!  MAYBE LATER THIS WINTER IT'LL PICK UP?!

I live in the Billings area. Have made it to Cooney a couple of weeks ago, first time in 15 years or so. Looking to get back into ice fishing and would like to catch some ling along with trout and walleye. Have never caught a walleye but willing to learn how. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

And willing to listena and learn.

My husband and I are new to the Ice fishing scene.  This is our second season.   We had some good luck and some not go good.   We are thinking of going up to Cooney this Friday, anyone have any suggestions.   We've never caught ling before so landing into one would be nice.
How is the ice?

Well I went there again last night to give it another shot. We got there a little after 6 and stayed until about 8:30. Fished in 10-15 fow in front of Cottonwood campground. Saw a couple of fish on the flasher but didn't get a single bite. We tried frozen minnows, mealworms, nightcrawlers, Rapalas, Swedish Pimples, powerbait, and about everything else in the tackle box. To top it all off I hit a deer on the way home. I guess it wasn't my night.

We went out last night, fished off the point and caught a ling and had a couple more hits on tip ups. Never did see anything on the finder, but moonlit night and snow made for quite the scene.
Stayed till 11, got there about 5
