tip downs
« on: Jan 24, 2010, 06:46 PM »
I have never used these but am thinking about giving them a shot for crappie.  I was wondering if anyone has any plans for how to make these. if so i would greatly appreciate it.

There was a guy - screen name Crappieguy I think - that posted his design a couple of years ago. It was a pretty simple design that use a folding frame a old style jigging pole.

I made a couple based on his design only using a balance beam approach instead of a jigging pole. They seem to work fairly good; I made them so that the line releases when the fish moves off which cause the beam to tip all the way up. This also gives the fish a certain amount of line so you have a some more time before he feels any tension and drops the bait. I'll charge up the camera and see if I can post some pictures.

Set up.

Another shot, the tip down bobber sit in a slot cut in the end of the dowel.

Tripped: when the fish swims off, the bobber drops off and gives the fish some extra line. This give you some time to set your beer down.

Folded up and ready to travel.

The total cost was about $2.00 each. I need to paint the ends either black of red to provide some contrast with the snow. What I like about these is that you can tell when their get ready to go. The minnow starts to freak out and the balance beam start to go up and down just before the bobber drops. They're far from perfect, but the seems to work OK and do give you a little extra time to get to them before the fish drops the bait.

that is a nice design I have some I won in a derby a few years back. A guy who used to frequent thses boards made them and they are high quality. I think he said about 4 bucks a piece to make. I do not use them often and really do not know why they are real nce for locating fish.

I use mine when I take the kids out; they keep them very busy.
