Icicles banned in NY
« on: Dec 24, 2009, 03:15 PM »
went to my local baitshop over the weekend and wanted to get some icicles turns out they banned them last year on account of hunts getting mixed in with them and i guess hunts are not certified for NY? what are your guys thoughts about this

Okay, you need to speak ice fisherman language... ;D

Or maybe it's a difference of regions.

You guys might hate me for this but I kind of formed this opinion when all that crap went down with the hunts last year. You really can't blame the state. It's the bait suppliers that are killing us. Somebody obviously isn't dotting there i's and crossing there t's. The state isn't playing games with our bait regs. A supplier makes a major mistake and WE pay for it by losing another species of baitfish to use.

I would also like to know what Icicles and Hunts are. You guys over in NY can't be using the things hanging from the gutters and tomato products.

Some of the other guys might be able to offer a better description but ill do my best. Hunts are similar to shiners but a little more hearty. Icicles have an irridescent color to them and somewhat resemble a smelt. I'm far from a biologist but that's my description.

Not sure about NY, but just a couple of years ago, I could go to the local baitshop and bye Smelt.  Due to the disease of the fish, in Lake Erie, etc.  Our State changed the way baitfish is sold, and what fisherman, can and can't do, with these baitfish.  Its hurt the local ice fisherman and women.  As baitfish, in the baitshops, is expensive.  Long story, but it use to be pretty cheap, to get baitfish, at the local baitshop.  Now, its very expensive. ??? >:(
