BBJ,

I have not heard of anyone going threw with a vehicle.  Perhaps just a rumor being started.

I might head out there tomorrow to check things out, but not 100% sure yet.
If I can Squeeze it in I will head out and punch a few holes to check the ice.

Cheers.

I was on coal yesterday, lots of ice in the 5 holes i drilled (14-16 inches) Got there around 10 am, action was steady till around noon. Brought half a dozzen small ones through the hole (they all go back) and seen one monster down there but had no interest in my rig. It looked to be about 4 feet long (big to me). There were 10 or so vehicles out on the lake, a couple of em were racing I'm sure!!! There is a main road down the lake and the snow off to the sides is packed down pretty good. Hope this helps.

Can't see it happen, there was some flood ice on the right side about 1 km down from the north launch but other than that the ice is good.  There are some real monsters in that lake, not uncommon to pull 98cm+ from there in the summer, pulled lots of monsters out 2 years ago, last year was a lot slower likely due to bad water level.

As i recall, there is a creek that runs into Coal lake right at the parking lot/staging area, isn't there.
In past years it would open up during a bout of warm weather. It's always dicey around there, although I haven't been to Coal in at least 10 years.

Someone told me it was right across from the NORTH parking lot.

When I was there for a few hours a couple weekends the ice looked to be over 14" almost everywhere I drilled.

I always wanted to go straight across from the lot...I see some guys there early moring...and easy to walk to.

Cheers!!

The most likely place is either beside the water treatment plant backflow (only 2-3 feet deep) or the culvert on the North end.  If they went through anywhere else it was extremely unlucky.

Well I ventured out to Coal lake today, stuck to the north side. All the holes I drilled were around 15-16 inches of Ice.
Did not see any signs of anyone breaking through in the area. There were a dozen or so out today.

The ice was cracking a fair bit where I was, kinda spooky..lol  Ice is good, but be cautious when driving out.
Good road down center of lake, like stated by old trout. Off the path the snow has been packed down from sleds, but still a 4x4 is recommended if you plan on cutting a new path.

No fish caught, none seen on Camera, Was only out to check the Ice.

Here are a few pics

16 inches of Ice at North Coal.
