Jiffy White Lightning???
« on: Nov 28, 2004, 03:00 PM »
Hi guys

I have been doing some research and looking at prices and I am leaning towards buying a 9" Jiffy white Lightning and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with them and has any comments. I like the bigger holes but not sure if there is enough power to cut threw 24" of ice.

Thanks

Sturgeon

I will recommend the Model 30. If you search the net, you can find some great prices. I just bought a second Model 30 10" for $328 with shipping included. Do your homework.

The weight is a concern for me since I will be walking and I will also be pulling a portable hut, Do you know how much heavier the model 30 is?

a 2hp auger is so much better than a 3hp, it's not even funny.  Sorry, but don't waste your money on a model 30.  The White Lightning will easily cut through anything you need it to.  I have a 2hp Lazermag (Strikemaster), and I haven't found ice I have any trouble with yet.  I live in northern Wisconsin, an average year is 30" or so.  The 2hp models run better than the 3hp too, due to tighter EPA regs on the newer 3hp motors.  You save probably 7 pounds or so, and that's extra energy for drilling more holes, moving more, and icing more fish.  With how good the 2hp models are (all manufacturers, to be honest), I can't believe anyone still buys 3hp augers anymore!

I have a 2HP Legend Lightning with an 8" auger. Love it! I'm sure that the 2HP models will do 9" but will be slower and may put more stress on the motor. I almost went with the 9 but was not sure what the power head would do and wanted to keep it balanced.

The 2HP (8") Jiffy models are 7 pounds lighter than the 3HP (10") models. That is why I got the 2HP Jiffy.

Good luck!

Regards,
Brian

If you don't have much ice get the 2 horse but if you are gonna have to run with an 18 inch extension like here in manitoba get the 3 I have personally seen guys with 2 horse jiffy's etc. have a hell of a time getting through thick ice with 8 inch let alone trying with a 9''. Richstick come and fish lake manitoba with me in late feb. early march I'll blow up your 2horse for ya ;) ;D

I have the legend lighting 2hp in 9" and had no problem drilling through 25+" of clear hard ice last season.  What I found out is that if you let the auger do the work and don't put much weight on it, it won't bog down the engine. It way be alittle slower then the 3hp, but is 5 seconds longer really worth the weight or the extra money.

Happy Drilling,

I've had two 3hp Jiffy's in the past and weight became a problem.  So I bought a StrikeMaster 2hp LazerMag Ultra with 9 inch auger. Never looked back, this auger drills just as fast as any Jiffy, runs smoother, easier to start, the list goes on.
Get a 2hp auger and enjoy carrying it all over the lake.

Trophy Hunter is dead on for thick ice.  Up here I can bury my power head in the ice without hitting water yet.  In late winter we start drilling with the auger level with our noses with extensions, just to get through the ice.  I'd like to see a 2 hp lift 48+ inches of shavings out of the hole and still keep on working.  But my 3 hp Jiffy does.

I use an extension on my 2hp StrikeMaster.  I live in northern Canada where the ice is usually 48 inches plus by mid winter.  My auger cuts it like butter.  Not knocking the 3 hp augers, use what you like, but for me cutting a couple of dozen holes per trip I like the lighter StrikeMaster.  Don't knock them until you try them!

Where abouts in Canada do you live? What type of 2 hp strikemaster do you have?

Monophil Your taller than me the power head is about level with my head and even with the extension late last winter i was bottoming out the power head without going through.
I have personally seen 2 horse jiffy's not be able to pull the shavings up.

Nah BW it's why he allows you to tag along so I guess your not just baggage . You come in handy for plowing trail, checking first ice and drilling holes when the extension is needed . ;D You dah man .lol ;D

Now I've seen the 2hp's go and they are fine even with a 10 inch hole if your not drilling a whack of them through 3 ft of ice . They will do it but in my estimation its gotta be hard on the rigging and if you added an extension and start pushing the 4ft mark like TH is talking , I don't figure they got the stuff . At 3ft the 2hp is working where a 3hp is just idling .

How much does this auger weigh, with a 9" bit and perform, compared to the model 30 with a 10" bit. Thinking, about getting either one.
