crappie question
« on: Dec 28, 2009, 10:38 AM »
At this time of winter is it better to fish for crappie in deeper water or shallow? I was fishing about 12 ft this morning and caught 2 not sure if I would have done better going deeper.

I would say deeper and it's absolutely necessary to have electronics.  Crappies can be anywhere from on the bottom to just under the surface of the ice.  Fun times when you find schools of them.

I fish this lake in pinckney that has about a 10 acre bay that gets like 35-40 ft in the center, I get the crappie right b4 dark in that 14-15ft range on the edge to the weeds and deep water.... Once it is dark those fish go to that deep hole and suspend but they are never in the same spot twice in that deep water.... I always seem to find them but sometimes takes 12-15 moves

If you know where the drop-off is, attack the ice.  Drill holes every couple of feet apart, from 7 feet deep out to where drop off stops.  Lower your camera and go hole hopping from there, until you find the fish.  Panfish move up and down depending on light conditions.  With several holes, it's easier to follow their movement.  If you don't have a gas auger, then focus deeper, like everyone said.
