Permanent Shack Hole Layout
« on: Feb 23, 2009, 03:37 PM »
Ok, so I have decided to build a perm so I can get out more during our 7 month long ice fishing season.
I think it will be an 8X8 and would like input on hole layout. I plan to use portable chairs for seating and there will be a 2X4 foot wall mounted swing down table on one wall. I have thought about removable panels in each corner 12"X24". My second design calls for  a 12"X 72" panel by the back wall and a 12"X36" in one corner plus maybe a 14"X14" under the table for dropping the camera down. So far I'm leaning towards the latter.
Anyone have any other ideas??  ? ? ?  FYI my auger is a 10 1/4" 3hp Strikemaster so I can't get tight into the corners.

I would start by laying out your floor plan by putting your chairs where you want them and your table. Once you have everything in place move around like you would when actually fishing. Try each chair with a fishing pole in your hand. Cut your holes for comfort, not too far away or too close, but just right. I don't like holes that things can be knocked off your table and into the lake. Think it through there is no set way you have to do it.

i just built a 7X12 house and i ended up putting the holes very close to the walls.  it is sorta difficult, but it is not too bad to drill.  the size of your auger blade doesnt really affect the distance they need to be from the wall.  the powerhead is the bulky part and in my case i have to be carefull not to ding up my walls too much.

the only bad part about having the holes close to the wall is that i have to drill with the exhaust pointing towards me so i dont get black crap all over the walls.  it can be tough on the lungs, and is more uncomfortable to drill that facing forward.  but.... after they are drilled, it is really nice to have the maximum amount of floor space, and it is very easy to mount rattle reels so that the line falls near the center of the hole.

i would rather cut holes in the floor for eahc individual hole rather than large openings that hold more than one hole.  you will be able to spread your lines out more.  but a big hole would be nice if you spear at all.

good luck

i like to drill 3 or 4 holes in one spot so you can see the fish taking your hook.  this only works if you fish in shallow water like i do.  i put openings in the four corners of my shack.  my shack is only 6 x9, i should have made it 8x8 or 8 x 10, anyway good luck

Here is my layout for the holes.

You can see a board on top of the plywood, that's where the bench seat will be. It will seat three. Two guy's can fish on the other side in chairs, or I'm going to use a cot to spend the night.

well drifter what did you end up doing?

I can't remember who said it...somebody...but it was something like 'this thread is worthless without pics!"...so where's yours?!?  ;D

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to lay out my holes in my 10x7...holes in corners are great for floor space but they kind of suck for keeping an eye on the kids so my shack is probably going to end up with benches or camp chairs on the 7' walls and holes towards the center of the shack for those seats - probably going to pack in 6 holes just so kids can all have lines down at once + cameras etc... not going to be nearly as big as it looked when I started!

I ended up using all my lumber to build a crate to ship a 40 horse Honda OB to my buddy back east.   :pinch:
I got tired of dissassembling crates so gave up on the idea for this year.
I will start over in the spring.  :)

I have a 3 person couch (it's actually a bit of a squeeze at 60 inches long) in my 8x8 and three 12x12" holes in front of the couch. I put the holes kinda far away because you can always move the couch forward if your rod is shorter. I use 30 inch rods. There is also a fold down table right in front (almost on top) of the holes. I figure that I'd rather just stop fishing if I really need the table (cooking food or something) so i don't care if it gets in teh way of fishing.

Oh and something I should have done... when you're cutting out the holes (use a jigsaw) angle the blade so that it points to the center of the hole. This way the wood won't fall through its own hole! might not be strong enough to walk on tho, unless you have 3/4" plywood.

the "o" are the three holes
the ===== is the couch
the "DDD" is the door

I saw one that had a interesting hole plan on a 8'x8', but cant find pictures......

It had 8 removable panels, all in the middle.....and a grid in the center made out of 2x2's+2x4's so you could have up to 8 holes open or remove individual panels to have less holes .....the grid was 4 holes long and 2 holes wide with seating all the way around, but you could modify that a bit.....

When i build my perm.....I plan on making a similar plan with a long bench on one side that folds up to make a bed.....but on the floor will all be a large grid with all removable panels 12" with 6" in between. I'll try and draw up a pic quick....

Sorry for this poor picture, wordpad locked up on me and had to take a picture with my phone before it closed.....

the x's are 6" the o's are the holes 6" There is a spearing hole option in the upper right hand corner. it also will have a 48" x 8' cot when bench front folded up....I like this option as I can change holes based on how many people are coming even though its usually 3 people that I would have out.
It doesnt look dimensionally right but gives and idea......
