Jig sticks
« on: Dec 07, 2009, 04:10 PM »
I've got a question. I'm sure you are all at least a bit familiar with those simple wooden jig sticks used "back in the day" right? I was wondering what's the biggest fish you've ever caught on a stick? Mine is a 34" northern, 13lbs. Came in and swallowed both shiners and my ounce and a half flasher! Thought my arm was going through the hole for a few minutes. Sure is a wake-up call when the perch are slow!

Nice! I love the old school sticks. No parts to fail, the line isn't thin enough to be affected too much by ice, and those big sinkers drop quick when the perch are in a frenzy.

I also still use them on occasion. When I'm on a school of big perch in deep water,  that are hammering anything, that big sinker really gets down there in a hurry.

duckdownr- I have a few rod and reel set ups, but I still use mostly the sticks. The rod and reel are good for finessing walleyes and if you want to use smaller jigs for perch and pannies. One downfall to them is that the wind blows the line around, so I only use them in shanties.

yeah they aren't bad when the weather is calm and the temperature isn't crazy cold, but those days are few and far between. They are good for deadsticking with shiners or other live baits.
