Yeah I haven't done it either, but I know it's to cold to snorkel for them through the ice. ;D
wish you many hook-ups

Get your self a spear, ice saw, chisel, ice tongs, and a decoy.  You can also buy large live bait if it is legal on the lake you're going to and use that as bait.  Use a pin instead of a hook so it won't count towards your line limit if you are also using tip ups.  Also bring a few dried egg shells with you.  After you cut the hole crush them up and drop them down the hole.  It gives you a much better visual reference on the bottom and will make the fish much easier to see.

I heard you guys spear them in the summer.  I tried once after a very frustrating weekend trying to get them on a fly rod.  I don't know if the shanty frowns on a guy trying to get rid of equipment through these threads but I have a "brand new" spear and snorkel I haven't used in years if you'd know anybody who wants them.  Just send a PM.

And when your done, please put your blocks of ice back in your hole and mark them. I had a budie almost get killed last year when he hit one with his snowmobile when we were going acrosed Seeley. Totaled his 2 year old snowmobile and he was busted up real bad. I missed it by about 12".

Got a new spear, tongs, decoy and ice saw for Christmas this year!  Already had the ice saw but will probably sell it and get it a Nils Auger.  Probably go this weekend somewhere here in MN.

Wasnt the hole he hit. It was the block of ice from the hole about that size by 18" thick that had froze to the ice. And then snow drifted over it. We now ride the middle of the lake so we have learned but I see a lot of others who havnt yet.

Check out the Darkhouse Spearing section on this site, lots of good info there, quite a few regulars from Montana too. (They might give ya the info on the how and when...but I'd be suspicious of the where  ;D)  Good Luck!
