Offset handle on Mora hand auger ?
« on: Dec 04, 2009, 09:36 AM »
I have an older Mora/Strikemaster hand auger, and the top knob is offset.  Is this normal?  It isn't terrible comfortable to me so I tried straightening it.  After realizing that it was probably designed this way I gave up.  I got on ebay to see if mine was "unique" and it looks like all of the ones on there are in line.

I still might try straightening it again.

The Mora works best with inline handles in my experience. Offset handles work great for the lazer augers.

the older style mora's like mine have the off set handles, and trust me , at first getting a hole started is a little awkward, but once you get used to it, off set is the way to go
give me 5 good reasons to head home and I'll pretend to consider it.

I believe my Finbor II is the same as the Mora (uses the same blades), the dual offset handle is great, lets you use both arms to drill. Once you get the hang of keeping the auger straight while you're starting the hole, it's not a problem. I can't imagine using an auger that doesn't have the offset upper handle, it would seem weird to me!  :P

Good Luck!

As CMMahy stated it's a good set-up. Takes a little getting use to but works great. I have one of those older 8" Mora's. No need to push down on the auger. The blade angle & sharpness does the work. If the blades are dull or the angle is off the drill will dance around the ice or dig in too much. If someone has banged the blades on the ice to clear off slush you may never get the angle back to completely right. This can change the angle on the auger where the blades attach.

Living proof that "beer builds better bellies"
