Brushy Creek
« on: Jan 21, 2004, 11:58 AM »
My dad and a buddy fished Brushy on Sunday and Monday. Caught total of 30 fish (gills and crappies). He said it is a very interesting lake with all the trees in it. I am planning to head up that way on Sunday. Any reports from this week would be greatly appreciated. I have never fished there. Any suggestions as to where some nice spots on the lake are to catch fish? Thanks.

I pulled my house off yesterday.. south end a large part of So uth is opening up..poor bite
I would try north boat ramp around bridge 1
I'm told they're catching a few nice crappies and gils in the trees.

There is a gas station in a little town somewhere near there, don't remember the name, that you can get bait, but if I were you I would just get them when you leave Des Moines.  Be sure to have oyur ice picks along with the way the ice is pretty crazy with various thicknesses.

Thanks for the suggestions. Plan to be there on Sunday. Not sure what it will be like with the predicted snow/rain or whatever we will get on Sunday though. I'll give it a try anyway. Good luck.

Five of us fished at Brushy Creek today. first time I have been there. It is a pretty neat lake and has a ton of trees. We fished from 11:30 am to 5:00 p.m. and caught a total of 22 nice bluegills. Only caught one small crappie that was too small. Pretty slow bite today.

Brushy Creek walleyes seem to be 20 ft under the ice no matter how deep the water.  You might want to bring your own bait....the bait house in the country was closed and the 2 in Lehigh were both out of minnows right before New Years. Last week the one downtown had bait but she closes at 4 on Sunday so get there early or bring your own. North end has good ice...12-14" crappies about 6" off bottom right after dark.

Does anyone know how to use a vexilar at Brushy Creek with all the limbs and brush in the water? I've used mine once there and it was driving me nuts

If there is brush below you, the vex will pick it up. This is one of the huge benefits of using a vex, the ability to locate structure.  However, sometimes it can be a problem trying to pick up your bait with the screen lit up from brush.  You can try turning the gain down as low as possible and still see your bait, but eliminating some of the branches.  Also, try big jigs or horizontal jigs to get a better signal with the gain down.  Larger wax worms and minnows also give better signals.  The only other option I can think of is to move just off the structure.

Just got home from Brushy, caught 6 walleyes it was a pretty good day. I agree with fishfinger about all you can do is turn down the gain or move nothing else works I've tried.

thanks for the tips...I'm heading up there Saturday..how deep of water did you get the walleyes?  A couple of weeks ago they were in 25 ft of water about 300 yards straight out from the far north boat dock.

Went to Brushy Creek yesterday from 4-6..tried by Taylors Island....bait house man said guys were getting good sized walleyes in 50' of water about 20' off bottom...had plenty moving through but no bites...went back into a cove to get out of the wind in 15' of water...fish moving constantly right off bottom but same story...around 6" or more of water sitting on the ice under the snow..might have to wear hip boots next time...roads very slick with all the snow blowing across...the wife says icefishermen are nuts..maybe she's right...  I'm going up again later

Fished Brushy today didn't do any good.  I went over by the west boat ramp I only had one fish come on my vexilar. I 'm going again tomarrow but I'm going too go where I've been catching fish.  I just wanted to try over there cause I heard they were catching fish there. I guess it could be the cold front that come through, but I still like going where I've caught fish.

Went to brushy yesterday. Ice was still OK. Some gils and perch. Fished west of north ramp in 18-20 ft. Seemed had to move from hole to hole to keep the bite going. Don`t know how long ice will be safe. Stoped at don williams. Ice was better. Gils was better. Craps were good. We caught alot of fish south of ramp late afternoon.

All the ice on Brushy Lake is Bad. But it is open below the spillway.
