Ice Fishing Suit Weight ?
« on: Dec 14, 2009, 03:58 PM »
I am planning on buying an Ice fishing Suit.   I have tried on the Ice Armor Blue and Grey and the Snow Suit.  I thought the Snow Suit and the Ice Armor extreme Grey Suit where kind of heavy.  The blue suit seemed about right for what i am looking for as far as the weight of the clothing.  I would like to use it on the ice and early spring, late fall for fishing.   I have not seen the IDI Artic Armor up close or tried one of them on but, I here that they weight about 6 lbs.  Has anyone tried on all 4 of these suits and what do you think as far as a using for fishing Winter early spring and late fall or when its cold and raining?  Thanks for any input.

I can reply on the blue Ice Armor and on the Arctic Armor (tried them on/have one) and the grey extreme (buddy has one).

The blue Ice Armor is basically just a waterproof/wind proof shell type suit. No insulation thus it will be the lightest in weight but all "coldest" requiring more layers. I tried these on when I was shopping as it was really the only other option at the time.

I have a Artic Armor suit and it is very nice. Not sure of the total weight but I would agree that it in the 6 pound range. it is also water/wind proof and insulated (plus floats which is nice too). I am a bucket sitter so regardless of the weather I am out in it and this suit has never let me down. A couple of thin layers under it and I usually have to leave the coat 1/2 unzipped on all but the coldest/windiest days. If you go with a Arctic Armor suit make sure you try it on with your layers so you get the right size, too small and you may have cold spots. Their sizing, atleast used to run kind of screwy. got my suit 3 years ago and I am 6'00 220 and wear a med coat and large bibs, would have thought I was XL in both, LOL

I know someone that has the Grey Extreme Ice Armor suit and it (the coat atleast) felt much heavier than my Artic Armor one when I handed his coat to him once. Plus he always seems to have to layer up alot more then me, but that is subjective as everyone reacts to the cold differently.

Hope this helps

I just bought the Vex jacket seems very well made seemed heaver than the blue or gray suits what I liked best is the top of the coat is fleece lined neck witch saves me a turtleneck or dickey. Cons to me are the removable hood is fleece lined snow mist could get it wet, and then suck putting on your head. Big add for vex on the back but the hood covers it .

I have a Mustang Survival Suit that I bought year's ago and have always been warm and felt safe in it both on the water and the ice.  Last year I purchased an I.D.I. Gear Ice Armor Suit for my 16 year old son, and he loves it.  All the other suits are great products and well designed for Ice Fishing but why would anyone buy an Ice fishing suit that does not provide floatation?  The Arctic Armor suit is also less bulky than some of the other suits but still keeps you warm.
