Mr.Heater Sunflower Tank Top Heater
« on: Feb 15, 2009, 08:11 PM »
Using this to heat my shelter                                                                                                             Love my fresh brewed coffee while fishing so i lay the tank on its side to brew a fresh pot.Never had a problem until today doing this. After a few minutes getting the java to near boiling flames began shooting up all around the perimeter of the heater.Freaked me and my partner right out when it started doing this. When i turned the tank back to the upright position it worked fine...........just no more coffee brewing.Any ideas as to why the heater did this? It's old with most of the screen burned away from lots of useage. Were we in any great danger while it was flaming up?

You are lucky to still be alive. Propane tanks should never be placed in anything but a vertical position, let alone be used in that position. I can't imagine where you came up with such a stupid idea! Propane is a liquid that vaporizes when it gets into the atmosphere. All of the safety devices built in to the tank are based on using the tank in a vertical position. Buy a cooker heater if you need to cook on it and use a hose from the tank to the heater. You are VERY lucky it didn't explode.

you need not lay the tank on its side. You can undue the sunflower a wee bit and spin it so that the sunflower grill faces upward. The sunflower is made to cook off of as well as heat. That is why they have such a heavy grill on the front of them.

I'm guessing not everyone has you're expertise in propane tanks. I don't think you need to call the gent stupid. Granted it's never a good idea to lay a tank down, I don't believe it's a stupid move if the guy doesn't no any better. Chalk it up to inexperience, that's why he asked for our help.

It says on the package to never tilt on side. Only one that can be moved like that is the Stove/Heater made by Mr.Heater.

They have a safty valve. It wont explode, just catch on fire.

I use one of these in the duck blind and there is no way you can make it face up. Some of the newer ones have a hinge so that you can make it tilt to a 45, but it wont face up.

I believe its because the propane valve is picking up liquid.
Think of using those compressed cans of air... Tip them sideways and they will shoot out liquid. I wouldn't do that again...

This information is incorrect depending on the application...Only Non-Regulator appliances should be only vertical. I have Several Heaters and cookers that have horiziontal tank.....Yes, It may not have been a good idea.....But your response is way out of line, especially with mis-information provided and personal attacks.

We had one years ago that would unscrew a little to lay sideways for cooking. Hafnuts was correct. Mr. heater did have a sunflower that could be turned to cook on.
