Tragedy on Moosehead!
« on: Mar 23, 2009, 05:52 PM »
Just finished watching the local news and heard of the husband and wife who lost their lives while snowmobiling when they broke through the ice on Moosehead.  It appears that they died by hypothermia.  Their bodies were found frozen in the ice somewhere in the Rockwood area.  What a terrible thing!  Our prayers go out to the family.

When I heard the story of them gone missing I was hoping against hope that they were just lost. What a terrible tragedy. Be careful out there Team Maine.

Typical maine waters.. 3 feet in one spot, none 50 feet away. Always awful when something like this happens.

I fish that way quite a bit. It is an easy mistake, you gotta remember to head for the smoke from the steam plant and don't get fooled by the lights. I have had more than one snowmobile stop by while I was fishing and were surprised they still had so far to go to get to Greenville or Greenville Jct. The temptation is to head into that cove before the island and toward the river. It's a shame.

Agreed with Jim P.  If you're coming down the west side of Moosehead, once you hit the 7 Islands you need to head across the lake to Moose Point and then (1) continue south into town or (2) west into in to the sport camps (if that was where they were headed).  The mouth of East Outlet isn't frozen at anytime during the winter.  A tragedy under any circumstances.

brace, I was thinking about it a bit more and they should install some type of warning device there. A flashing red light like they put on a cell phone tower would work.

I couldn't agree with you more JimP - That's been a place waiting for an accident since I was a little kid fishing off Hog Back Island some 30 years ago.  My sled went toes up off 7-Islands a couple of weeks ago.  The folks in Wilson's Camps were nice enough to let me tow in there.  I was surprised how far out the open water goes.  It's a mistake anybody could make - particularly at night.

The accident occurred where the seven islands are.  Not sure which of the islands it was closest too but from Wilson's description, it sounded like the northeast section of the islands.

Not a good way to end what was and still is a good riding season if you know where to go.  Now is not the time to think about taking any body of water anywhere.  It may take longer, but take the trail system.  You will be safe.

May they rest in peace.

The accident happened in the vicinity of the East Outlet, which is always a dangerous place.  My friends in Greenville always stay a long
distance from it.  When I say a long distance we are talking a mile or two.  The outlet claims a life about every other year, and accidents
about yearly.  There isn't a way to mark or light the area to my understanding.  Local motels and lodging should have warning
brochures to give to patrons to stay clear of this dangerous area.  Unfortunately it is an easy mistake for out of state visitors, that go
to the area vacationing.  Of course there is nothing anyone can do to prepare the visitor that is utilizing grandma's cabin for a
weekend.
