Gill Report!
« on: Mar 02, 2009, 11:42 PM »
I'm not sure about other lakes but the little dink holding spot I fish always tells a story on depth. We started fishing at 9ft of water with only a few fish caught then started moving shallow. You see we have clear ice with an influx of water from this past weeks rain and now we have more O2 in the shallow areas. Not to mention the suns rays are melting the banks during the day and providing a shallower food source. We finally found the gills in about 5ft of water along a weed bed. They are shallower now. hope this helps a few fisherman out.

My son pulled up his line and said "Look dad! I only have this much line out and I'm getting bites." He had about 2 1/2' out.

They are shallow, got a limit yesterday in 3-4 fow.  The water was so stained I could not even see my jig but my line was boppin.  I usually sight fish all year long over weed beds in less than 10 fow with sucess but last ice is definatly killer with the fresh o2 due to the ice melt.
Good luck all

Took my limit of 'gills (one crappie) again this evening on the same little lake in Troy in the same spot (near the island). Was getting fish right away near bottom out of one hole on the mini-Slammer and switched to jigging out of that hole. Put the mini-Slammer in a another hole 20 feet away and eventually had to pull it becuase everytime I'd set it and turn around, there'd be a fish on it - 3 feet down.

At the end I was catching fish 4 inches down (10 inches of ice). THEY WERE COMING UP INTO THE HOLE!! I could pick and choose which one I wanted.

This spot is about 11-12 feet deep. Too dirty all season to run the camera.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
