Valpo Chain Ice Conditions-pics
« on: Feb 12, 2009, 01:58 PM »
I made a trip around the lakes this morning to see what the rain and wind had done to our ice! Here's some pics for those guys that can't drive by. I think we would really need some cold to firm up some of these edges. The only option I could see is getting out on the ice at Loomis via the dock but I didn't try it or would I recommend it. Be careful out there!! Click on this picture and it will show you pics from Flint, Loomis and Long.

Thank for posting the pic's Mike....Long lake looks like you could still get on at the DNR Ramp, but I am sure that ice is rotten form the rain....Again, not worth risking it...Maybe a few cold nights and that could tighten  back up a bit but it's not looking good. Again, thanks for the info... You da man!

have been to long ,loomis&flint have not seen anyone on till sunday afternoon 3 guys on long lake.temps have been holding low,so might be starting to look good.shorelines are still thin and weak,so finding a spot to get on might be challenging.the channel on flint is open water halfway out to the lake,so be careful if your going out from there.i will drill some holes this morning and report back.    john

just got back from long, flint & loomis.flint lake ther was one person about 150 yds. out from the boat launch.i went out there and drilled a hole finding 10" of good ice.shore was good and easy to get on.heard alot of popping and the lake was groaning, which means it`s making ice.went to loomis next at rodgers lakewood park.walked the pier at the beach, ice is very thin along there maybe 2" need to find a spot to get on safely.drilled a hole and found 8" of good ice, with 1 person fishing by the deep hole off the beach.went to long next at the boat launch.you can get on the ice very easy and when i drilled a hole 50 yds. out found 7" of good ice.there also was 2 people fishing.long was also cracking and moaning.for me i`m going ice fishing,it`s back on.just remember to always be careful and use good judgement.good luck and may the fish be plenty. john

Thanks for the report John. Wauhob was a NO GO, ice was bad. Checked all over Loomis, SE corner, 9" in all holes drilled. Didn't really fish hard today, more scouting than anything!!! That Super Yooper is a heck of a guy!! C-ya. Crappie Rob. Thanks to Bill Baker for helping us out on Wauhob. He advised us not to go out!! Good choice.

Tonight low 14,  this should help.   I wish it wasen't snowing 3 to 4 inches so far.    I may take a look at the ice on Friday  to fish Long Lake on Saturday.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I guess I got a little too excited. They are now calling for 6 inches of snow Friday night.  Iffy ice with snow on top is a no no for me.  Looks like I may be getting ready for the softwater sooner than I wanted! :-\

I drove around the Valpo Lakes this afternoon. One shanty out on Long Lake near the boat ramp. Flint ramp looks like you could get on. John at the Bait Shop said he had seen someone out there recently. He was busy at the shop putting out his open water stuff. We had a heavy rain yesterday and then about 3-4 iches of snow last night. I may try to get out on Saturday if I can get someone to go with me. Be safe out there!

I may be up for a Sunday outting at Long or Flint as well.  If I went Saturday, it would have to be early on and Early off, as my son has a BB game early afternoon, so Sunday would be preferred.  You guys can PM me and let me know what your thoughts are.  We are supposed to get nailed with about 6 inches of snow tomorrow, but it is supposed to be in the single digits tonight with wind chills about -10 they are saying.  That could really tighten things up if it stays that way the next couple of days.

Right now it looks like the time I'm going to make it is Sat afternoon, so it doesn't look like it will connect you guys but I really appreciate the offers. Maybe some others can go out so that we all have someone with us.

SouthsideBob, Super Yooper, and myself got on some nice chunky crappies tonight!! Kept 22 fish. Slowed down when the winds shifted to the East. She's tightening back up really nice. 9" of ice. Checked Flint this afternoon 8" of ice, didn't fish on Flint. You can walk right out from public access, don't have to walk far. It hasn't started snowing as of 3 a.m. C-ya. Crappie Rob.

by the way folks i live on flint and the ice is super on the southend.you can get on &off with ease.have seen some decent fish come out in the last few days.could definately be worth your while.stay off the west end as the water is open and flowing, could be very thin in spots.good fishin.    john
