Swimmin in Webster
« on: Feb 18, 2009, 04:51 PM »
Just saw on the news 2 people went through webster lake on their 4 wheeler.  They were fine and they pulled themselves out, but the fire department came to get the four wheeler out.  Some lady called for help as she was out there watching her kids skate.

That is  a tricky place if you do not know the currents, we have good ice we just need to be careful.

I was thinking about going there this weekend.    ???    ???

Is that State ramp area OK.   Was thinking about Breeze Point Way area  also. Maybe Memorial Beach.

Where is the channel  ????    The narrows between the ponds  ???

Thanks in advance for all your help,   Jeffrey

There are 2 channels you have to watch, But if you fish the boat ramp memorial beach area you will be just fine. At the boat area though do not go to close to the brush line you see on the left running parallel to the covE. There were iceboats out there all week.

Right on, Jim!

How deep is the water where they went through?

Here's the thing, first of all, the ice was 12" thick where I was fishing, plenty of ice to get on and off. The guy that went through the ice lives on the lake. You would not think that someone familiar with the lake would go through the channel this time of year. it was wide  open, water from one side to the other about 1ft. across.he told me he always goes through there with his snowmobile. I have no idea what he was thinking of but let me tell ya I wanted to strangle the guy for risking his kids life with his sheere stupidity. prior to falling through He actually went to the left shoreline, Heading to the back lake, him and his kid got off the atv and looked around the point. they then preceeded to get back on the atv and go in the middle of the cut where the droppoff is  I think it is like 6-10ft where they were and I knew before they went down they were in trouble.they just dissapeared, and I just started running as fast as I could with all my gear on while calling 911 on my cell. it is something I will never forget in my whole life and it took a while for it to sink in what had happened but this could have all been avoided with common sense. I'm just happy the kid was fine after he dried off, as for the dad I just hope he learned something from this.

Just checking back for ice conditions. As I was first posting the accounts from Jim were coming in.

Here's the thing. By rescuing the son, Jim actually saved the fathers life also. He removed the immediate priority so the father could then help himself.

I know first hand how this works from several accidents.

I go 100 miles out in the Atlantic, 1000-2000 feet deep, for 3-4-5 days at a time. Try doing stupid stuff out there.

BE PREPARED
DON'T PANIC
PRIORITIZE
ACT AGGRESSIVELY  WITHOUT BECOMING ANOTHER PART OF THE ACCIDENT

YOU DID ALL THE RIGHT THINGS INTHE RIGHT ORDER  MY HAT'S OFF TO YOU JIM

Great Job Jim
I can relate to what you experienced today. I pulled a father and two young children out years ago and let me tell you what happened today will stay in front of your mind for the rest of your life every time you step on the hardwater.
Your initial reaction focuses on the child's safety and there are no thoughts of jeprodizing your own life.
After it is all done is when you realize what happened ,what you did and in my case actually started shaking.
Now you know what it feels like to be a hero and I believe that I speak for everybody on this sight.
Thank you for being in the right spot at the right time.

I'm glad you guys posted this information!  My wife saw this on the news and thinks the whole state is unsafe for ice fishing now!  I assume Webster Lake has quite a current and that is why there is open water.  I've told her that smaller ponds and lakes (the ones that I fish) are fine!  I drill plenty of test holes before venturing out this time of year anyway!  Jim......whoever you are....GOOD WORK ACTING FAST!

WTG JimI speak from experience when I congratulate you,I had a similar experience years back and to this day my eyes are always looking for it again.Like you say there is no reason for it but there are idiots out there who are willing to put not only their lives but the lives of their children in jeopardy for no reason.
