Shanty anchoring
« on: Feb 02, 2013, 05:21 PM »
How would you anchor a fishontario shanty? I'm going to be sleeping in it this up coming weekend and don't want to wake up in another town.

Put some screw eyes in your moulding about 4-5' up on all four corners, then get out on lake with some line and a some 2x2's cut about 18"  tie a piece of line around the middle usually about 10' if line works.   Now once on the ice and your shack is set drill 4 holes at each corner, now take your. Wood with line tied and stick it down the hole so it goes Accross the bottom of the hole now thread your line through the screw eye and make a loop in the main part of the line about 2' below the screw eye, put the end of the line through the loop you just made and pull,  it's basically like a truckers knot and gives you a mechanical advantage and you can really tighten up the line. Once it's tightened to your satisfaction just put a couple half hitches on the line so it can't come loose.  When your done just chip out your hole untie the line use a stick to push one side of your 2x2 and pull it out the hole.  I use that same setup on my 8x9 perm shanty so if it holds that then it'll hold yours.  Cotton Clothes line or a natural fiber something that'll rot away if worse case you can't get your anchor out of hole just cut line as close as you can.

I would not use the wood screw type eyes. They would pull out way before you broke the 2x2. Get the eye bolt type (1/4" or 5/16") with nut. Drill thru the plywood ends, and use fender washers & double nuts.

When I say screw eyes, I mean screw eyes.  Don't use no whimpy little eye use a big one,  or use the ones where you tighten the nut on the back side.  I am assuming you'll  be securing your shack when your using it,  I don't see to many
Fish Ontario shacks left out as permanent shacks.
