Auger Extensions - does size really matter??
« on: Jan 27, 2009, 02:10 PM »
Hello everyone.  Need some help from you experienced drillers.  Most of my ice fishing is in Manitoba on rivers and lakes.  Last Sunday at EOM, I was almost down to the power head.  Looks like I need to add.  Would you invest in the 12" or 18" extension?  I have a Mako 8".How thick does the ice really get in Southern Manitoba?  Thanks.

Spend the extra few bucks and get an 18 inch. Out on the big lake the ice gets very thick plus you never have to worry about thickness again....."just ask my wife"...LOL.
I see the Frisbee getting bigger,Bigger,BIGGER....then it hits me.....

NOt to sure how to post a pic but
I have made several for guys. They are adjustable 3/12/18/24 give or take no exact depth just ball park, just cut the wholes to where we want. I leave it in all year and as the ice gets thicker i pull it out a bit. all the way to 24 inches and yes it does goet used at that depth.
let me know if you want one-

Ya thats a good idea actually....just make one that slides in the inside of the flighting and has holes for different depths...good Idea.

I plan on making my own but great suggestion.

I've drilled a bazillion holes on frozen lakes here in Manitoba and the lion's share have been on L. Manitoba which is likely the thickest ice one will encounter. Never needed more than the standard 12 incher. In fact I now use a 6-12 adjustable and most winters never use the 12 inch setting. Couldn't imagine drilling holes with an 18 inch extension :o...and I'm 6'2" tall :)

If your drilling holes for inside your shack its a different story though.... if your shack floor is 10-12" off the ice then you need that much more of an extention on your auger to get through the ice.

...and your re-drilling into old holes. Tough on augers ;)

A very good idea and well designed. Would be rather expensive to have a welding shop fabricate one I would think? :-\

Yes it expensive for a shop to make-em for you. Welders charge anywhere between $85-120 per hour plus material. He have made a quiet a few for guys on the side so we pass the savings on. Another post stated $54 for an 18". The full 24 would only be needed for snow on top of ice. But hey, why not have it longer, (I like the "JUST IN CASE") adjustable and make it so you can leave it in the auger at all times, where i fish no one is around to dig a hole for me so forgetting something is not an option.

come up north at the end of march middle of april.  12 inchs most of the time is too little.

I have a 14" extension that was made for me by a machinist friend. He usually makes them 8" for regular height folks but I stand 6'-3" so he figured I would be okay. I cannot imagine a shorter person tackling an 18" extension.
The adjustable unit looks sweet.
My 2 cents,
Glen

Don't know where you fella's are fishing but yesterday on L. Winnipeg I drilled all my holes with just the 6 inch extension... with a bit to spare ???. Likely by spring I will have to adjust to the 12 inch position on the big prairie lakes. Whiteshell and NW Ontario lakes never build that much ice.
