« on: Feb 06, 2009, 09:46 AM »
Ok -  If you were able to take only one bait for perch with you, what would it be?  minnows, wigglers, eyes? especially if you knew they wern't very aggresive on this particular day. What rig(hali, tear drop etc..)

My best set up is to use two poles, one with fairly heavy orange/gold jg of decent size with wiggler and or wax worm, the other has an ice fishing slip bobber, gold bare hook and shiner.  Jig the heck out of the one and keep a lively minnow on the other.  I like to keep terminal hardware to a minimum and will even avoid split shot if I can.

A lot of the Perch guys are using a 1-2 set up similar to this. Bring 'em in with the jig, feed 'em the minnow. :icefish:

All you need to catch any fish is a hook & worm.  Really.

Since it's only one rig and ya didn't say what type or depth of water.

I'd have to opt for a search lure type rig. A Castmaster or Swedish Pimple with the hook removed and an ice jig tied below (usually a #8 or#10 Rocker type lure)on about a 3" mono dropper. Ya can pound the heavier spoon on the bottom or use a lift/fall routine to attract (call) the perch in and with a slight jiggle the dropper lure will trigger 'em. I have also did the same routine with a Custom, Jigs, and Spins "Slip Dropper". I usually use this type of rig with waxies or wigglers but mousies have worked well in the past also. Really an effective deep water rig as the weight of the spoon facilitates getting to the bottom fast when the school is there but I have used it successfully in shallow water at times.
