Strange Hook Set
« on: Feb 18, 2009, 06:52 AM »
Just figured I would share an interesting story from this weekend.  My buddy and I were fishing for pike on Saturday morning at Silver Lake in Barnard.  My pal had been an hour and a half late in the morning, so when the first flag went up we decided I would take it since I had to wait for him.  When I set the hook it felt like a good fish.  I started pulling in the line and it felt like I had a monster.  My heart started racing, and I had to let the fish run.  It took another 100 yds about, i started pulling it back in.  I finally got the fish to the hole and was amazed by what I had done.  It was a decent fish, not a monster.  But it was hook dead in the side, about halfway down its body.  I had never seen this before.  We laughed like crazy.  The only way I could get it through the ice was for my buddy to slide the gaff under its gill and pull it up that way.  We were thankful that we didn't actually have to gaff it since we released it with a decent chunk loosened from its body where the hook was.  Anyone else ever foul hooked a fish on a tip up?  Oh, yeah, the fish was around 8-9 pounds.  Only flag we had in two days fishing.

Ive hooked a pike in the "chest" area, and also on the outside of the gill plate. My theory is that the pike swipes at the bait hard, misses, and the hook snags somewhere where its not supposed to. That, or the fish is running with the bait and the hook isnt in its mouth, so when you set the hook you pull it out of th bait and just happen to snag the fish in the body somewhere.

yeah, that's what we figured.  it was pretty crazy.  a fish feels a lot bigger coming in sideways, let me tell ya that.  it was just crazy.  that hook was 12-14 inches away from the fish's motuh.  good story i guess.

Had one hell of a hit last year out on Champlain. Thought I had Champ for a minute.  :o Turned out to be a 4 lb smallie, he'd swiped at the lure and took it in the side. Yeah they do feel alot different foul hooked.

i have down it a few times jigging perch, get a hit and managed to hook em in the tail.  also done it a few times casting a rapala and catching bass the same way. they feel like monsters when they get hooked like that!

not ice fishing but my dad hooked a 25 lb carp with a 4lb test crappie set up at Mnt. Independence  he hooked it in the base of the tail.  I had to chase this darn fish with the trolling motor for about 30 mins  before we got her, took some pics and let her go..   We did the same thing last spring but dad figured he could get the fish in faster if he snugged up the drag some more,  my brother and I told him don't   SNAP!!!   darn kids don't even listen when there 60 years old :)

yeah, it is a strange thing. done it during summer, but not on a tip up before, guess a first for everything.  as for you taggin', how you gonna catch any fish without me with ya?  hopefully they have a category for most tiny perch outta the same hole.  thats all you've done this year, i think i would know.  gimme a call when ya get back, you can cry on my shoulder about the big one that got away.  then we can venture out to some other lake with no fish in it.

Funny you should bring this up. This a 4.6 pound Bass I caught last weekend in Maine. You can't really see where he was hooked except the smelt's head is right where it penetrated the bass.
