Today On Winni
« on: Jan 19, 2009, 06:42 PM »
Got up to Meredith around 730, the day seemed to be going great until the auger somehow slipped off the front of my quad and got ran over. Split the gast tank wide open, was NOT a happy fisherman when that happened! Ended up going to AJ's and buying a chisel so that me and my buddy Tom could get some fishing in. Overall the fishing was great, we caught 3 White Perch, 3 Lakers all 20+, and 1 salmon. All except the salmon were caught jigging, and the salmon took the Smelt at 30 feet of water with it set down on the bottom. The men in green gave us a quick visit, but they werent bad at all.

Very quiet on the lake overall, at least in Meredith Bay. Not many people there at all.

On top of the good fishing we got to try the new fish finder, that thing was AWESOME!! Everytime we actually saw a fish on it we caught the fish. That was REALLY cool to see!

Here are some pictures!

Man I'm jealous.  Nice fish.  Looks like your right out in the middle about 1/2 mile from the docks.  How much ice you got there?  Must have been a real PITA with a chisel.  Either way it looks like fun.

You could have lost the chisel on the first hole & it would have still been better than my day at work :D

Ouch... the loss of the auger hurts! Hope you're able to get a new tank and fix it before the next outing... At least you now have a back up chisel.  :)  Nice to see you got into the fish.
I am human. I am a predator. Don't ask me why I'm staring down a hole, waiting for a fish to bite. Its instinctive and I refuse to fight it.

Unfortunately I do not! There certainly is no shortage of them out there though.

Scott,

Glad to hear you got a chisel. Never leave home without it especially during first ice and bring it out with you regardless of ice thickness. It will save your life and come in handy for other things. Also keep it sharp. I have a jiffy ice chisel 2 piece and absolutely love it. Best chisel on the market. I saw them for $55 this year at KTP and know that they can range up to $100. I bought mine several years ago and paid $45 so KTP's price wasn't bad.
I thought about buying another just to have while at KTP but couldn't get the wife to budge.

A chisel is proactive while ice picks are reactive. I crack up during first ice every year when I see people checking the ice with a 40 lb auger. Several years ago on Newfound, we pulled one out of the lake (a guy went through just beyond where we were fishing, past a pressure ridge). After the ice thicken up we fished it out. Laker Taker has that auger.

Thanks for the advice Jiggin, like some of you may have noticed me saying. Its my first year ice fishing, so I certainly have a lot to learn!
