Crappie's Stomach contents...
« on: Jan 13, 2009, 04:12 PM »
Just read an article that recommended checking the fish's stomach contents, to determine forage base. Here's a Crappie I caught, it had four small fish and one of my waxworms in its stomach. Anyone else???

in alot of lakes around here, big crappies and big perch forage almost exclusively on young of the year panfish.

i love seeing what they're eating. I was fishing with a buddy the first day of trout season a couple of years ago and he caught a 21 inch brown trout out of a small stream that had 4 tiny pickerel in it, including one still hanging out of its mouth.

I find baby young of the year gills,in all larger crappie and jumbo perch, the smaller keeper say 10-11inch crappie are full of zoo plankton, but the big fish always has young of the year gills in them. One jumbo perch "14 inch plus" had over 20 of those baby gills in it and it still hit a small forage minnow.
