the new dead see FLAMING GORGE
« on: Jan 12, 2009, 08:23 PM »
Yes...the gorge is the new dead sea...my dad went out today with one of his buddies and only charted 3 fish...ive been skunked once this year and caught only one on two seperate occasions...this is in the same spots where id catch twelve a day a few years ago...and everyone we talk to seems to be having about the same amount of luck...is anyone doing half decent on the gorge?

Well it hasn't been a great season so far, if you can even call it a season. This warm weather is the pits. Fishing seems to be a bit slower than usual. I have been averaging about 4 to 6 a day. My buddy put a 16lbs'er on the ice several weeks ago and had one in the twenty lbs range to the hole and lost it. Haven't done any rainbow or ling fishing so far. I have yet to land any sizeable fish this season, but i have hooked up on a couple i just can't keep em hooked up. I just prey that the rest of the season isn't this warm windy weather.

The weather has been way warm and windy the last two weeks. The ice is gone in the Cody area---we had 10" --12"  a week ago :(
Time on the ice is always worth more than money

do you guys think maybe it is becouse of the lack of ice this yr, that has givein the uper end more pressure and more people out chasin ling,it has put a ton of presure on lostdog and the confluence but i really think that the ling are starting to afect are lake. we are still doin great out of the boat but we have a lot less pressure.ash

Fishley, I think you are right, between the crappy ice and heavy pressure on what ice there is are the reasons for the slow fishing. I hope the Ling are not taking a toll yet, but they might be the other reason also (I can't wait to get down lake though - come on cold weather!!!!

I think the same thing too. There may just be too many people on a relitively small strip of ice. I hope the cold weather gets here and stays. It was cold for a while there, but now it's just went away. We need some more of that to ice up the more southern parts of the lake. I hope the ling aren't taking THIS much of a toll. Obviously it's another predator in the lake but I don't think they could do this much. IDK...hopefully it heats up as the lake freezes and people spread out, but usually early ice is awesome.

sad thing is i really think the ling are hurtin the crawfish so bad that its turnin a tail spin on every thing else all your smaller fish lakers browns bows etc eat crawfish and it is a magger forage base in the gorge and it is slowly being eatin by the ling that are from one end to the other we may not see total efects yet but some day we will unless we as fisherman can target them and make others aware of are problem things are goin to change but i really think we can slow the proses by catchin as many as possible thanks ash

View of breeze hill looking to skunk cliffs~ toward Buckboard.  Fishing sucked today, ice was not good on the little bay I fished, 4 inches of soft crystaline ice.  I fished 3 hours x 6 lines with proven bait in a proven hole, not a bite.

Here's what we do in the dead sea, we take pictures of fishing, not fish. Ice was once great but was getting softer. It was sort of cool to see clean water though as the bay was so clear I could see bottom over 15 feet down...not like the pea soup at Sage Creek or worse yet at fire hole.
Be sure to watch for soft ice as the next few days the temps are not making good ice, and barely keeping old ice in place.

This is a look into the dead sea first hand. 15 feet of water, no fish.  I spend too much time amusing myself with a camera when the fish are not biting.

Ice is same over here except in a few select spots on Ocean and Boysen...lots open water at Ocean on the west side...warm snap now makes me concerned for if we're even gonna get decent ice at all this year. I killed a rabbit this morning and now I gotta get out there and get him dressed out, temps coming up around 45 and he's laying out there in the warm sun, sheesh!  ???                        LT ISM
