Jigging or dead sticking
« on: Oct 26, 2004, 03:50 PM »
When targeting trout is any technique more consistant the other. I can only have 2 lines in the water here and am wondering if it is better, or at least more consistant, to A) deadstick two rods with live bait   B) Jig with one rod with just a lure or a lure tipped with a bait or C) using one rod for each technique.

I would try both until I saw which one was working for me.

I like to have one pole with a shrimpo tipped w/ a wax worm, and have the other line be either a dead stick nightcrawler. Also, if they are very aggressive about a 3-4" live shiner or sucker under a tipup works well too!
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

I often catch an equal amount of trout on my deadstick as I do my jigging rod, sometimes more. I always use two rods, one with a small jig or lure tipped with a cralwer piece, and a deadstick rod about 5 feet away with a plain hook and split set up with a crawler piece. Rainbows don't seem to be that fussy usually. A good ol' cralwer gets em like nothing else. Using a small jig with the same and just gently jiggling and occaisonally lifting it works better than aggressive jigging most of the time. So I would always start with one jigging rod and one deadstick. Many times I deadstick with both and catch over 100 rainbows per trip, because sometimes it's more effective.

when I fish with him he I THINK he uses about 1/2 of a nightcrawler and I think 6 lb. test. (correct me If I'm wrong mack)

Correct IFB. I use six pound original stren and about half of a crawler. If it is a fat crawler, maybe just a third or a quarter, you don't need much. I even usually use a half of a crawler or less when drifting for river trout. I use a #6 baitholder and a #5 water gremlin split shot when dead sticking.
Big dawg, I would start with one deadstick placed in a hole not more than 10 feet from the hole you are jigging in. With your other rod, jig a small lure very lightly, not very aggressively, tipped with about a half or third of a crawler.

When deadsticking I usually set it within two feet of the bottom. If I have the deadstick in the same hole as my vexilar, I will raise the bait up if I see fish coming through higher.
