New species for me
« on: Jan 03, 2009, 03:58 PM »
Never nailed one before but got this one during a lull in the already slow walleye action today on the Ottawa River... a great muskie bait from what I've heard.

it looks like what we have in iowa called gizzard shad.  rock creek lake here is full of them and so is lake hawthorn.  great catfish bait and really smelly and oily fish.
early to bed early to rise fish like h.e.l.l. and think up lies.

Definatly not a gizzard shad.

Its a trash fish... They stink like a dead carp.

They fight pretty good though.

I've caught a couple in Temiskaming and the Blanc river, off the north end of the lake. They fought good but everybody said they were trash.I might try smoking one like a lake herring if I get anymore
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.

It's a Mooneye or Skipjack like they say in previous posts, real common on the Missouri river.  Good cutbait.

those mooneyes are pretty cool.  I've caught them around here at lake champlain, but they are supposedly pretty rare there.  too bad too, cause they would be perfect catfish bait.

Nice Mooneye!!!!
Cool fish for sure!
Congrats on the lifer!

I really dont understand why people feel the need to through fish on shore!!???
Mooneye are a Native species as are goldeye.

and as for killing a skipjack!! in many northern states "Skipjack Herring" are on the endangered list. A skipjack on the rocks can get you a HUGE fine and a lifetime without fishing in that state.

The reason we throw them on the bank or cut them up for cutbait here in Nebraska is because there is an overabundance of skipjack. People in general don't keep them at the rate of Catfish,Sauger and other disirable fish, so we have a lot of skipjack. I mean ALOT. Besides buzzards gotta eat, same as worms.
