Twin Beaches Sun Jan 25th
« on: Jan 26, 2009, 09:13 AM »
Salmon man and I went out to twin beaches yesterday.  We arrived at 8:00am and went SW-W from the launch about 800m and fished in 11’ of water for about 1.5 hours and caught a few (about a dozen) small perch with a couple borderline keepers.  We marked a fair amount of fish on the flasher that were not takers so we switched lures/jigs/colours/bait and were not happy with the slow fishing so we headed West.

About two miles from shore out in about 13’ of water we drilled a couple holes and then dropped some lines with confidence baits (small jigs tipped with sparkling wigglers) on and not 2 minutes in I landed a nice jumbo.  We fished for an hour and caught more slowly but steadily.  I left for 10 minutes to give our neighbours truck a boost and got back and Salmon man had caught a perch on a set line with a small salty so we decided to drill a couple more holes and set up some set lines.  One pull, two pulls… starter rope dangling in hand I let Salmon man know we’re not using set lines today.  We carried on until 2:30 and then pulled up stakes and left.

We ended up with 15-20 nice sized perch and probably as many or more small throw backs.  Overall things were slow but steady with a nice 10”-11” average keeper fish size.

  • -240C
  • 30km/hr W wind
  • Hard packed snow (could drive just about anywhere with 4x4) be careful use your judgment.
  • 36” – 38” of ice (darn near extension time)

ickirby...those neighbours you boosted...was that by any chance a black path finder??? lol  ;D

I also went to twin beaches with a couple friends... we decided to drill a couple about a km from shore.. not really knowing where to go considering it was our first time out .. it was 9 feet of water without the ice.. landed a nice jumbo and a medium sizer... then went dead for about 45 minutes...so we decided to head out further onto the lake...about 1.5-2 miles out ;D.. decided to drill a couple more holes...was 12.5 feet of water and we started hittin bigger and more of them..so of about 3-4 hours of non-stop action...it finally started to slow down about 1 o clock... we ended up staying till about 5... the bite began to pick up id say around 330..i would like to know how the fishing is at night in lake manitoba...anyone know??

    That it was.

We should have moved when you guys did but we wasted another hour in closer to shore (just enough fish to keep us interested).  When we did move we caught fish for the first hour or so but like you said it died off mid afternoon.  Since we were getting bored and had no more auger to move and drill we just took off.

Glad to hear you guys did well, and I'm glad we could help out with the pathfinder.

Tried smoking L. Manitoba tullibee years ago. Found it too dry and bony for my taste.  Like goldeye, whitefish and lakers better.

I have been fishing that part of the Lake for many years! Get as deep as you can 1-2 miles out and you will be fine! I have had days where you cant get the jig to the bottom and never mind fishing with 2 rods. Even early spring in a boat we were slaying them. I also use to go to Steep Rock which is about 2 hours north of St. Laurent 10 years ago and the walleye action there was incredible! Now I wouldnt waist gas.

yeah kiwico we tried about a mile out...last time...is was a little slow...we went 2 miles out...hammered...but seemed to die down...so we're gonna try 3 miles out this time..like i said earlier...if they stop biting...just keep moving...i guess a hand auger makes it a little difficult...but just ask mnt mike...he seems to be the know it all

we'll be driving...i wouldnt suggest it...unless you got a decent 4x4... once you get past the first initial deep snow...a km down the snow starts to lower and is more solid..

For all who may be interested in frying tulibee - they are not all that great when fried with milk egg and flour. Too fishy and very mushy - in my opinion they should only be smoked but maybe someone might have a good frying tip.

have you tried cubing it into small portions and throw a thick breading on it...usually that gets the fishy taste out...ive never tried it though so im not sure...but thats what i do with big northerns...or maybe try with cracker crumbs...or that beer badder...
