NJ: Favorite Lure for Panfish while jigging
« on: Dec 30, 2008, 08:35 AM »
So what lure do you use for the perch and Pans?  I was thinking of getting some mail order bait too. Maggots, mealworms, or waxworms?

 What combo do you use?
 Color lures?
 Do you use glo lures?
How many baits on a hook?
Do you combine baits on your hook?
 Hook size too?
  TIA for replys! Chris

The most consistent color combo for me has been gold and red for perch, crappie, etc; in fact, that combo  has worked well over the last few years on certain lakes. I haven't been out this season but I just made 30 or so jigs and I'm dying to try them out. Let me know your results if you try that pattern. Good luck this season.

White tear drop. I try other jigs but always go back to that one.

Teardrops, red, yellow, orange in varying sizes and 1-3 wax worms. Depending on the lake 1-2-4 pound test line. Jig, jig, jig. Use the electronics, any kind you have, they all provide an edge. Enjoy and a great and Happy New Year to all.

I second the Swedish pimple with mousie.  I usually use the smallest one (1/10 ounce) blue and silver for panfish.  Just like any other fishing, there are days when the fish want some other color or some other bait, so if they aren't biting good, experiment.  Mostly perch (or bluegill in weeds) but every 10 fish or so you will get a surprise (pickerel, crappie, bass, catfish, some quite decent sized).  I used to spool jigging rods with 2 and 4lb line, but have switched to 12 lb fluorocarbon and have not had any breakoffs by fish since then.

I don't have a favorite jig. I often tip whatever jig I have with a shiner of fathead.

12 pound anything is not a good option when using the smallest teardrops. 1-2-4 pound will take large fish but there are always the toothy devils that tend to keep your teardrop selection small and ever changing. If the fish want big jigs then use heavier line. When we used to get on the white perch on greenwood lake in 30-40 feet of water and pull 2 at a time for an hour then heavier line and frequent re-ties were the rule. It always pays to try the 2-3 basic presentations to see what is  wanted. My 1-2-3 choice is teardrops, small Hopkins/pimples, then air plane jigs with fat heads if you can get them. ;D

For me my favorite has always been the smallest gold pheobe tipped with two mousies. I catch everything on this combo. Other good ones include swedish pimples, castmasters, and rapala airplane jigs.

I like to drop a small swimming lure just to feel out if there are any active fish. Then I like to use the old Arnold fairy jig with maggies. If that doesn't produce then I go to the smaller Marmish or Jammin' jigs. It's finding what they want that day.

For me I have always done well with a small jigging rapala and then a swedish pimple with mousies.
