Mr. Heater
« on: Jan 13, 2009, 10:57 PM »
Does anyone elses mr heater shut of constantly?  Mine will shut off right when is starts to get warm and i end up starting the thing a hundred times a day.  Is this just a safety feature or is there something wrong with mine?

Common with them.  Mine sits in storage now because its such a pain.  Try airing it out where the bottle screws in and by the pilot.  Does it seem like the wind blows it out or just losing pressure?

Which one, catalytic heater, Mr. Heater or one of the buddys? The buddys have an oxygen shutoff and tip over shutoff. Make sure it is level. If it is not the buddy, you may have a bad connection with air getting in. They seem hit or miss, I have fished with them great all day, then another guy may have one that always has issues. They are love hate. If you purchased it recently & have your receipt I would suggest exchanging it and trying a new unit.

I bought one earlier in the year, it was junk, took it back, same model and it is great now... Good luck

Mine seems to do the same thing once the bottle is half empty. I usually end up switching bottles and letting the first one warm up for a bit and then switching them back. It is a bit of a pain. May just use the bottle untill it starts acting up then switch it out and finish using it on my stove.

If you are unable to exchange the heater and don't want to junk it you can always take it apart and locate the tippover/low O2 switch (usually a small marble sized sensor with 2 wires going to it) and jump the switch.  NOT RECOMMENDED for the heater will continue to run if oxygen levels become unsafe and will still run if tipped over.  But otherwise the heater should operate normally.
If it ain't broken, you ain't try'in!

I got rid of mine ,annoying piece of junk to have to keep relighting, there have been enough complaints about them you think that company would have corrected the problem by now

Yes i rewarded the same company with that other piece of junk (lil buddy)and bought a basecamp style ,best heater i have used ,easy to light, makes a little racket when the tank goes empty so i know when to exchange cylinder. It stays lit which i like,  Seems to sit good in my hut without tipping. I would buy another one if this thing wore out

Mine will work great untill the tank is getting low and starts freezing up.I take the tank off(wear gloves that thing is cold) and shake the heck out of it.I suspect the valve gets clogged from ice from freezing. That will usually do it till empty. If not I switch out tank and warm up at home and use on cooker. It sounds like something is wrong with yours.I do not know for sure but would think the pilot flame heats up a thermocoupler and lets the gas valve stay open, check to see if everything is clean and not bent and flame is pointing correctly.hope this helps. If you have a recieght return that sucker for another ;D

Same problem here. I can hardly get mine lit, much less keep it lit.  Maybe a bad thermo-coupler, but it hasn't worked since I took it out of the box.

Another idea... instead of an outdoor store, check out your Big Box Hardware Stores... I wont name-names, but the place I got mine starts with an "L" and they have Lowe prices.....  Hardware stores sell a different model for less. Its called the "Tough Buddy", regular buddy size, different color, seems to have different material.  I am not sure if it is made different, but I have had good luck. Also, I paid $20.00 less then what I have seen them for at Sporting goods stores ($79.00) .

I've been using the base camp in my fish trap pro and so far really have no complaints. I like the 45 degree angle idea, but it seems to me that most of the heat still comes right off of the top of the heater. Just watch your tent material, I've already accidentally added one ventilation hole to the new shanty!(first day out nonetheless)

I just purchased the Lil Buddy 3800 btu heater last week.  Paid 69 bucks Canadian up here at at place called Princess Auto.  Keeps my FT Scout warm as toast on minus 20 days.  Much better than my catalitic that I had ... which I constantly burned my coat on.
Nice thing about this heater is that it doesnt take much room, which is great for me, due to the tight space of the "scout".  I drill one hole, drop in the humminbird, and set up the Lil buddy facing me while sitting in the chair.  It doesnt radiate heat as much as the manufacturers say it does, but it does produce a good steady heat.  The external metal remains cool to the touch, so burning your tent shouldnt be an issue.
Do yourself a favor tho .. change out the bottom cannister holder .. as they are not manufactured very well .. you cant push down the 1lber into it properly.  How do I know? .. the first time I used the darn thing I lost the bottom down the hole .. in 23 ft of friggin water ..
I replaced it with a colemand cannister holder .. with a handle .. so its  more secure and tent materials cant go close to the unit.
I like it cause it has a built in lighter and stuff .. and seems pretty well made, (excluding the bottom propane holder) and throws heat well.  I have had no issues with it being top heavy or it falling over ..

The Mr Heaters a couple years ago had an issue with the thermocouple not installed correctly and they would keep going out. They have since solved this and somewhre on the net is instructions on how to fix this yourself. It was very simple

I have a Mr. Heater Sunflower style heater running on a 5 pound tank ant it's sweet.
When it gets really cold the max. 14,000 BTU's warm the place up in a hurry!!!  ;D
When it's warmer than -20C though it's a little too warm, even on low. They do have a smaller model though.  ;)

I have the little Buddy heater.  Have had NO problems to speak of.  Matter of fact, I went snowmobiling on Sunday & used the heater to warm up the enclosed trailer while we were getting dressed & that thing had no problem running & staying lit at 8300'!!  I know others who have had prob's at 7500'.

I had the same problem with my Mr. Buddy.  The pilot flame doesn't reach the thermocouple.  I took mine apart and made some "minor" adjustments so the pilot flame is barely in contact with the thermocouple, now it works fine.

Keep your propane where its warm when not in use.
Mr. Heater has an Oxygen sensor that shuts it off when there's not enough air.
Make sure you're letting enough air in your shelter. I've buttoned up my shelter and come back to find the heater shut down. Good. It works.

They don't work for squat outside.

But they do put out 1,000 more BTU than the DYNAGLO for the extra $50 you pay.
Mr. Heater does not have a tip over switch that kicks in when it is laid on its back so that it can be used for cooking.
DYNAGLO says they have a tip over switch, but I don't know if it is possible to lay it on its back.

I have the buddy.

mine ran like crap,  until I bought the adapter hose and put the 20LB'er on 'er!

I do not know if it was a pressure issue, but now it is awesome.  It never dies...starts up...i lt 'er warm up...MAJOR WARMTH...and no little bottles all over...

Kind of a crappy thermometer......but highest reading in the hut +42c.

Just adding, that I placed mine in a metal box, with a hole cut in the side with foam padding for the propane hose to the 20 LB'er to fit through.  I find with all the smaller and lets admit it fragile parts of this heater...when I bash around trying to get to a spot...well, I have wrecked one........to learn this.

Good luck!!
