Mazonia Area Ice?
« on: Jan 09, 2009, 09:15 PM »
Has anyone been in the area to check out the ice yet? New to area and I think it is the closest to me and wanted to check it out? Looking for Pannies and maybe a wally or two? Which lake is the best and safest? Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Good safe ice, clear and about 6 inches. Fished Pondo and bite was slow but caught a few. Appears moving is the key. In hindsite probably would have been best to fish the smaller lakes as we never really got on them.

My best Pondo plan is cut hole find fish.  Then cut a couple nearby and hole hop.  Better results than wandering.
I bet those pike are bigger this year.

Which is the best lake to find some decent crappies and gills to eat? And where would I go about finding directions to the lakes? There is nothing to detailed around that I have found, not trying to steal anyones spot but new to the area and looking to get out and make day of it sometime. Thanks appreciate it!

It is on the east side of 53 and south of Braidwood and north of gardner. when you get into the park and drive around you will see some of the lakes, others are hidden by the trees and hills from the strip mining. I do not know which lakes are good.

Good luck out there.

If anyones going out to mazonia this weekend ,per sunday. I live in Braidwood , and know some of the lost lakes
But with all the snow this week the walk to the back might be alittle to much.
Pondo got a very deep hole just out in front of the old steam shovel, and another around the back with a large flat next to it.
PM me if anyone wants to go, the bait shop is open for minnows, i've got plenty of bee moths!!

Chops,

They allow atvs back there? Might be interested in checking it out, I live in Oswego, and driving to WI or IN for decent gilberts is draining the $$$. I'd like to pull the Trekker II out, but with all this snow, 4x4 seems the best way to cover ground.

I never seen ATV's so my guess would be no. Maybe Chops can answer though.

Atv's would be risky.  Ice varies a lot.  Lot of altitude variations and springs caused by that.
I always seem to cut a least one hole in thin ice there.   Plus I always go by the rivers if they are up and moving has to be a lot of ground water yet.

I think it's called Sportsmans Edge...maybe. Chops would know.
BTW how's the ice up der Chops;D I'de pm ya but I'm having a problem with my password as jdisci and I don't have enough posts yet as Disci, hopefully the mods can fix it for me and I can go back to jdisci. The only ice I've seen down here is on the roads the last couple of days. Willie even has had no school because of it. Really haven't been looking for ice as much as work though and I ended up leaving most of my ice gear in Il. for right now.

I fished a Wilmington Strip mine club today very close to Mazonia.
With some refreeze on top most holes topped out at 7-10 inches.
Best today one 9 incher , one 9 1/2 incher. ;D

Nice gills, Illinoizboy. Was out at lake 8 wednesday got about 25 dinks, I mean small dinks, so small the waxie was stuck in thier mouth. I am going to try doc's lake friday. Ice was 10+.

They open at 6 so the sign says.

Those guys are nice I forgot to ask about 4 wheelers, or motors in summer.

Good Fishin!

I'll even say it again, perty gills there John. Glad you hit the big hootchies out there on the pit.

I hope to get out to the pits this year before the ice melts away.

I don't really know how those Mazonia lakes are numbered. I know the Big ones in the South unit.
In the North I think the first one with a parking lot is Bull Frog.
Any help here?

Some of the ones in the west end have numbers and names. some don't have anything.
Doc's lake on the north end had any where from 5 to 8 inches of ice today.
got about 10 bass, alot of fun to catch, got them on swedish pimple and minnows and tear drops with waxies. It was better than working.

Good fishin!
